Thomas P. Brown Jr. was one of the top amateur tennis players in the world in the 1940s and a consistent winner in veterans' and seniors' competitions. He was the son of Thomas P. Brown, a newspaper correspondent, later public relations director for a railroad, and Hilda Jane Fisher, who became a schoolteacher when Tom was a boy. Though born in Washington, D.C., Tom was considered a San Franciscan all his life, having been brought west by his parents at the age of two.

The 1946 Wimbledon Championships took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. The tournament was held from Monday 24 June until Saturday 6 July 1946. It was the 60th staging of the Wimbledon Championships and the first one held after a six-year break due to World War II. In 1946 and 1947 Wimbledon was held before the French Championships and was thus the second Grand Slam tennis event of the year. The Wimbledon Championships would take place every year until 2019, a span of 74 consecutive years before the event would be cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yvon Petra defeated Geoff Brown in the final, 6–2, 6–4, 7–9, 5–7, 6–4 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1946 Wimbledon Championships. Bobby Riggs was the reigning champion, but was ineligible to compete after turning professional.

Jack Kramer defeated Brown in the final, 6–1, 6–3, 6–2 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1947 Wimbledon Championships. Yvon Petra was the defending champion, but lost in the quarterfinals to Tom Brown.

Bob Falkenburg defeated John Bromwich in the final 7–5, 0–6, 6–2, 3–6, 7–5 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1948 Wimbledon Championships. Jack Kramer was the defending champion, but was ineligible to compete after turning professional at the end of the 1947 season.

James Cecil Parke and Ethel Larcombe were the defending champions, but Parke did not participate. Larcombe partnered with Ronald Thomas but they lost in the semifinals to eventual champions Randolph Lycett and Elizabeth Ryan.

Pat O'Hara Wood and Suzanne Lenglen were the defending champions, but O'Hara Wood did not compete. Lenglen partnered with Jean Washer, but lost in the semi-finals to eventual champions Randolph Lycett and Elizabeth Ryan.

Frank Hunter and Bill Tilden defeated defending champions Jacques Brugnon and Henri Cochet in the final, 1–6, 4–6, 8–6, 6–3, 6–4 to win the gentlemen's doubles tennis title at the 1927 Wimbledon Championship.

Mary Browne and Elizabeth Ryan were the defending champions, but Browne did not participate. Ryan partnered with Helen Wills, and defeated Bobbie Heine and Irene Peacock in the final, 6–3, 6–2 to win the ladies' doubles tennis title at the 1927 Wimbledon Championships.

Jack Crawford and Elizabeth Ryan were the defending champions, but did not participate.

George Lott and Lester Stoefen were the defending champions, but did not compete.

Jack Crawford and Adrian Quist were the defending champions, but lost in the third round to Jean Borotra and Jacques Brugnon.

Fred Perry and Dorothy Round were the defending champions, but Perry was ineligible to compete after turning professional at the end of the 1936 season. Round partnered with Don Butler but lost in the third round to Don Budge and Alice Marble.

Don Budge and Alice Marble were the defending champions, but Budge was ineligible to compete after turning professional at the end of the 1938 season. Marble partnered with Bobby Riggs and defeated Frank Wilde and Nina Brown in the final, 9–7, 6–1 to win the mixed doubles tennis title at the 1939 Wimbledon Championships.

Bobby Riggs and Alice Marble were the defending champions, but were ineligible to compete after turning professional.

Tom Brown and Jack Kramer were the defending champions, but decided not to play together. Brown partnered with Budge Patty but lost in the first round to Tony Mottram and Bill Sidwell. Kramer partnered with Bob Falkenburg, and they defeated Mottram and Sidwell in the final, 8–6, 6–3, 6–3 to win the gentlemen's doubles tennis title at the 1947 Wimbledon Championship.

Tom Brown and Louise Brough were the defending champions, but decided not to play together. Brown partnered with Margaret Osborne but lost in the semifinals to Colin Long and Nancye Bolton. Brough partnered with John Bromwich, and they defeated Long and Bolton in the final, 1–6, 6–4, 6–2 to win the mixed doubles tennis title at the 1947 Wimbledon Championships.

Bob Falkenburg and Jack Kramer were the defending champions, but Kramer was ineligible to compete after turning professional at the end of the 1947 season. Falkenburg partnered with Frank Parker, but lost to John Bromwich and Frank Sedgman in the semifinals.

Pancho Gonzales and Frank Parker were the defending champions, but were ineligible to compete after turning professional.

Eric Sturgess and Sheila Summers were the defending champions but Summers did not compete. Sturgess partnered with Louise Brough and they defeated Geoff Brown and Pat Todd in the final, 11–9, 1–6, 6–4 to win the mixed doubles tennis title at the 1950 Wimbledon Championships.
