17 March – RTÉ broadcasts the first domestic television footage in colour – coverage of the Railway Cup Finals from Croke Park, Dublin.^[1]
31 March – Cigarette advertising on television in the Irish Republic ceases.^[1]
3 April – Ireland hosts the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time. It is presented by Bernadette Ní Ghallchóir from Dublin's Gaiety Theatre, and won by Monaco, with the song Un banc, un arbre, une rue (A bench, a tree, a street), sung by Séverine. Again the programme is aired in colour.^[1]
June – Taoiseach Jack Lynch states that it is unsuitable for a publicly funded broadcaster to give airtime to representatives of illegal organizations. In response RTÉ argues that such a change would require the implementation of Section 31 of the Broadcasting Act.^[1]
June – The Broadcasting Review Commission is established.^[1]
11 June – Newsbeat airs for the last time.^[1]
28 September – An edition of the current affairs programme Seven Days features interviews with both branches of the IRA – the Official IRA and Provisional IRA.^[1]
29 September – The comedy series Hall's Pictorial Weekly Incorporating the Provincial Vindicator, presented by Frank Hall is aired for the first time.^[1]
1 October – Taoiseach Lynch issues the first directive based on Section 31 of the Broadcasting Act, From now on RTÉ is "to refrain from broadcasting any matter of the following class, i.e., any matter that could be calculated to promote the aims or activities of any organization which engages in, promotes, encourages or advocates the attaining of any particular objective by violent means". On the same day, Minister for Posts and Telegraphs Gerry Collins bans the broadcasting of material that could promote such organisations. The directive is renewed every years, and was not repealed until 1994.^[1]

<i>Halls Pictorial Weekly</i> Irish satirical television series (1971 to 1980)

Hall's Pictorial Weekly was an Irish satirical television series broadcast on Raidió Teilifís Éireann from 1971 to 1980. Regarded as RTÉ's flagship comedy show, it featured satirical sketches on current news stories, politics and popular culture, as well as parody songs, comedy sketches, re-edited videos, cartoons and spoof television formats. The show was written, presented and edited by Frank Hall and featured a cast including Frank Kelly and Eamon Morrissey.

The Jacob's Awards were instituted in December 1962 as the first Irish television awards. Later, they were expanded to include radio. The awards were named after their sponsor, W. & R. Jacob & Co. Ltd., a biscuit manufacturer, and recipients were selected by Ireland's national newspaper television and radio critics. Jacob's Award winners were chosen annually until 1993, when the final awards presentation took place.

RTÉ Television is a department of Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), Ireland's state controlled national broadcaster. Its first channel was Teilifís Éireann, which began broadcasting on 31 December 1961. Since the 1960s, RTÉ Television has added channels and digital television service.

Raidió Teilifís Éireann is an Irish public service broadcaster. It both produces and broadcasts programmes on television, radio and online. The radio service began on 1 January 1926, while regular television broadcasts began on 31 December 1961, making it one of the oldest continuously operating public service broadcasters in the world. It is headquartered in Donnybrook in Dublin, with offices across different parts of Ireland.
