The 1977 Pan Am Badminton Championships was the inaugural edition of the Pan American Badminton Championships. The tournament was held from 22 to 24 April 1977 at the University of Moncton in Moncton, Canada. The first six countries to compete in the Pan American Championships were the United States, Canada, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico and Venezuela. [1]
The 1977 Devlin Cup was also held a day prior the championships and acted as a team event for the Pan American championships. [2]
In the men's singles event, Roy Díaz González won the gold medal after defeating Jamie McKee in the final. [3] In the women's singles final, Wendy Clarkson defeated compatriot Lesley Harris to win gold in the women's singles event.
In the men's doubles event, Jamie McKee won another gold medal when he partnered with John Czich to defeat compatriots Ian Johnson and Pat Tryon in the final. [4] In the final of the women's doubles event, Pam Bristol Brady and Judianne Kelly of the United States defeated fellow Americans Diana Osterhues and Janet Wilts 15–4, 15–9.
In mixed doubles, the gold medal was won by Bruce Pontow and Pam Bristol Brady with the silver medal awarded to Chris Kinard and Mike Walker.

The Devlin Cup was a mixed team badminton tournament between the two Pan American countries, the United States and Canada. The biennial tournament was first held in 1956. In 1977, the tournament acted as a prelude and a team event to the Pan American championships. The tournament was later proposed to be merged with the Pan American Championships in the next few editions. [5]
Canada won the Cup for a third time, defeating the United States 3–2 in the tie.

Kevin Qi Han is an American badminton player who won the bronze medal in the inaugural men's singles competition at the 1995 Pan American Games, followed by the gold medal four years later in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He was the first ever American player to captured the World Grand Prix title by winning the 1995 Bulgarian Open in the men's doubles with Thomas Reidy.
Pam Bristol Brady is an American retired badminton player who excelled at both the national and international levels. Noted for her anticipation and crisp shot-making ability, she won twenty U.S. national titles between 1972 and 1985; four in singles, eleven in women's doubles, and five in mixed doubles. In the three national championships that were open to foreign competition during her badminton prime she reached the final in six of nine events, winning the women's doubles with Diane Hales in 1973. She won South Africa's open singles and women's doubles titles during a U.S. team tour of that country in 1971. She shared both the women's doubles and mixed doubles titles at the first Pan American Championships in 1977. She represented the USA in team matches including the Uber Cup campaigns of '71-'72, '77-'78, and '80-'81. Mrs. Brady was elected to the U.S. Badminton Hall of Fame in 1981. She is married to Danny Brady, a fine player in his own right, with whom she won national mixed doubles titles in 1981 and 1982.
Kevin Haroldo Cordón Buezo is a Guatemalan badminton player. He won two men's singles title at the Pan American Games, four title at the Pan Am Championships, and six title at the Central American and Caribbean Games. He is a five-time Olympian for Guatemala participating at the 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and the 2024 Olympic Games.
Michelle Li is a Canadian badminton player. Li is the 2014 Commonwealth Games champion and the first Canadian to win an individual gold medal in women's singles badminton at the Commonwealth Games. She has won gold in both singles and doubles at the Pan American Games and won the singles and team event titles from the Pan American Badminton Championships. As a competitor for Ontario, Li also won singles, doubles, and mixed team titles at the 2011 Canada Winter Games.
Virgil Soeroredjo is a former Surinamese badminton player and now coach. He competed for Suriname at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He also competed for Suriname at 3 Pan Am Games: the 2003 Pan American Games, the 2007 Pan American Games & the 2011 Pan American Games. As a young badminton player of the club SCVU in Suriname Virgil Soeroredjo won numerous juniors titles and was soon selected to represent his country abroad winning several juniors medals at Caribbean, Central American and South American events. Much of his success was with his doubles partner Mitchel Wongsodikromo.
Phillip Hung Chew is an American badminton player. He won two gold medals in men's and mixed doubles at the 2015 Pan American Games. Chew also participated in the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. He won the 2021 Pan Am Badminton Championships doubles with his brother Ryan Chew. He trains at the Orange County Badminton Club, which is founded by his grandfather, Don Chew.
Mitchel Arthur Wongsodikromo is a Surinamese badminton player and coach. He competed for Suriname at three Pan Am Games: 2003 Pan American Games, 2007 Pan American Games & the 2011 Pan American Games. As a very young badminton player of the club T.N.F. in Suriname Mitchel Wongsodikromo was an exceptional talent and won numerous juniors titles and was soon selected to represent his country abroad winning several juniors medals at Caribbean, Central American and South American events. Much of his success was with his doubles partner Virgil Soeroredjo.
Rachel Honderich is a Canadian badminton player from Toronto, Ontario. She has been one of the top ranked women's individual and doubles player on the continent and a contender in major international competitions. She is a vice-national champion in women's singles and has won several international titles since 2010.
Osleni Guerrero Velazco is a Cuban badminton player. He is the first Cuban badminton player to win a medal in the Pan American Games. Guerrero also competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Iris Wang is an American badminton player who competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Jason Anthony Ho-Shue is a Canadian badminton player. He won the gold medal in the men's doubles at the 2019 Pan American Games, and at the Pan Am Championships in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. He also won the men's singles title at the Pan Am Championships in 2016.
Brittney Shannon Tam is a Canadian badminton player. In 2012, she won a silver medal at the Pan Am Junior Badminton Championships in the mixed doubles event. In 2016, she won the gold medal in the mixed team event at the Pan Am Badminton Championships. In the individual event, she won the gold medals in the women's singles and mixed doubles event. She competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.
Josephine Yuenling Wu is a Canadian badminton player. She clinched three Pan American Games gold medals by winning the mixed doubles title in 2019 and 2023, and in the women's doubles title in 2023. At the Pan Am Championships, she has won seven gold and five silver medals since her debut at the tournament in 2016.
Wendy May Clarkson Carter is a Canadian badminton champion who was ranked third in the world in 1978 and also medalled or ranked at Canadian Open, national, Commonwealth Games and Pan Am Games.
Ty Alexander Lindeman is a Canadian badminton player. He won the gold medals in the mixed doubles at the 2023 Pan American Games; also at the 2018 and 2022 Pan Am Championships.
Kevin Li is a Canadian badminton player from the Lee's badminton club. In 2013, he won the silver medal at the Pan Am Championships in the men's doubles event partnered with Nyl Yakura, they were defeated by their compatriots Adrian Liu and Derrick Ng in the finals round. In the team event he won the gold medal.
Brian Yang is a Canadian badminton player. He was an integral part of the Team Alpha that won the mixed team relay gold at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics.
Fernanda Saponara Rivva is a Peruvian female badminton player who competes internationally.

The tournament was held from 19 to 23 April 1978 at the Peru National Badminton Stadium in Lima, Peru. Five countries took part in the event, which were Canada, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.
