Elections to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly were held in May 1980. The Indian National Congress won a majority of seats and Arjun Singh was sworn in as the new Chief Minister. [1]

Contents

After the 1972 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election, the number of constituencies in Madhya Pradesh was increased to 320, following the recommendation of the Delimitation Commission of India. [2] [3] The elections were held after President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy ordered the imposition of President's rule in the state on the advice of the Fourth Indira Gandhi ministry, which acted on basis that the victory of the Indian National Congress in the 1980 Indian general election proved that the state government no longer reflected the will of the pepule.
