Ferenc Puskás was a Hungarian footballer and manager, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and the sport's first international superstar. A forward and an attacking midfielder, he scored 84 goals in 85 international matches for Hungary and later played four international matches for Spain as well. He became an Olympic champion in 1952 and led his nation to the final of the 1954 World Cup. He won three European Cups, ten national championships and eight top individual scoring honors. Known as the "Galloping Major", in 1995, he was recognized as the greatest top division scorer of the 20th century by the IFFHS. Scoring 806 goals in 793 official games during his career, he is the seventh top goal scorer of all time.
Jean-Alain Boumsong Somkong is a French former professional footballer who played as a defender. He began his senior career with French club Le Havre in 1997 before joining AJ Auxerre in 2000. His performances at Auxerre earned him a move to Rangers in 2004. One season later, he signed with Newcastle United. where he spent two seasons. In 2006, he joined Juventus, freshly relegated to Serie B and helped the club return to Serie A. He returned to France with Lyon in 2008. His last spell was at Greek Super League side Panathinaikos before ending his career in 2013. Between 2003 and 2009, he made 27 appearances scoring 1 goal for the France national team.
Dimitris Saravakos, nicknamed "the Kid", is a Greek former professional footballer who played as a forward. Saravakos is widely considered to be one of the greatest Greek footballers of all time and a Panathinaikos' legend. The IFFHS chose him in the best XI of all time of Greek football in 2021.
In the 2007–08 season Panathinaikos played for 49th consecutive time in Greece's top division, Super League. They also competed in UEFA Cup and Greek Cup. Season started with José Peseiro as team manager. In summer of 2007 many players left the club including Igor Bišćan and Víctor Sánchez who hadn't fulfilled the expectations of Panathinaikos' fans with their performance. On the other end the return of Giorgos Karagounis after four years pulled the spotlight and considered one of the most important signings of the 2007 summer transfer window. Panathinaikos also signed Brazilian midfielder Marcelo Mattos from Corinthians, Dame N'Doye from Academica, Josu Sarriegi from Athletic Bilbao and some other players to help the team win its first championship in four years and celebrate the club's centesimal anniversary in the most appropriate way.

Olympiacos finished 2nd in the regular season of the Greek Super League and ranked last at the play-off games, resulting in a 5th place at the League, the worst position of team's recent seasons. Olympiacos also participated in UEFA Champions League 2009–10, and managed to qualify to the knock-stage. They lost twice from French side Bordeaux, 3–1 on aggregate.
