On 25 June, Brian McClair signed for Motherwell on a three-year contract, having been given a free transfer by Manchester United. [1]

On 13 January, Andy Goram signed for Motherwell on a contract until the end of the season. [2]

There was also disappointment in the cup competitions, as the club were beaten by First Division club Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup, and Dundee United in the League Cup. Manager Jim Duffy was sacked and replaced by Alex McLeish midway through the season.

The 2001–02 season was the 121st season of competitive football by Heart of Midlothian, and their 19th consecutive season in the top level of Scottish football, competing in the Scottish Premier League. Hearts also competed in the Scottish Cup and League Cup.

The 1998–99 season was Heart of Midlothian F.C.'s 16th consecutive season in the top level of Scottish football, the new Scottish Premier League, formed by the clubs from the previous season's Scottish Premier Division. Hearts also competed in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, Scottish Cup and League Cup.
