1999 Delhi hit-and-run case

Six persons, including three police officers were killed by a speeding BMW E38 in the Lodhi Colony area of Delhi, India, on 10 January 1999. After following trails of the engine oil, police found the BMW at 50 Golf Links, the residence of Rajeev Gupta. It was then revealed that Sanjeev Nanda, grandson of Indian Navy Chief and son of Indian arms dealer Suresh Nanda [1] [2] was driving the car after returning from a party with Siddhartha Gupta (son of Rajeev Gupta), and Manik Kapoor. While Nanda and several related parties were initially acquitted and released in a trial in 1999, [4] he was later found guilty in 2008 and sentenced to two years in prison, which was reduced to time served, a large fine, and two years of community service by the Indian Supreme Court in 2012. [5] The case attracted media attention, and was viewed by India Today as "a test of the judicial system's ability to take on the powerful". [6]

Hit-and-run case

In the early morning of 10 January 1999, Sanjeev Nanda was returning from a late night party in Gurgaon with some friends.

Nanda had reportedly been instructed by his parents not to drive that night, but was driving anyway. [7] There was a police checkpoint on Lodhi Road and it appears that the constable may have challenged the car, though it is also possible that the car was going so fast that it was out of control.[ citation needed ] Sanjeev's BMW crashed through all the people at the police checkpoint, immediately killing two constables and two others. Another policeman and another bystander died later in hospital. The seventh victim survived. [8]

After running through the policemen, he allegedly stopped the car to check the damage, saw people under the car, and according to the prosecution, at this point a co-passenger said: "Let's go," and they quickly drove away. [9] The car was then driven to a house in Golf Links, New Delhi, where a watchman and driver were instructed to clean the bumpers and bonnet of the car. Subsequently, the police charged these three with destroying evidence. A few days later, a witness came forward to describe the scene. At the time of the crash, he was on his way to the railway station. [4]

NDTV sting operation

Defence lawyers were caught on camera offering money to a witness in an NDTV sting operation, and as a result, the Delhi High Court barred them from practice for four months. [10]

Investigation

The vehicle's broken registration plate was found on the scene the next morning. Preliminary investigations revealed that the car would have been going at 140 km/h when it hit the victims. [7]

Within a few hours of the incident, Inspector Jagdish Pandey of the Police Control Room of Delhi Police traced the car by trailing the oil leak to the grade from the spot of the accident. [11] They found the one-month-old car, purchased in his sister Sonali Nanda's name, with foreign number plates, which had not been registered in India. Attempts to clean it were still in progress. Nanda and his friends were arrested, but his clothes, and those of the others who helped clean the car, were never found. Nanda and his friends were charged with culpable homicide in court. [8]

Re-trial

The case went up for re-trial and was tried on a fast-track basis. On 2 September 2008, Nanda was convicted by a Delhi court for killing six persons. On 3 August 2012 the Supreme Court reduced his prison sentence to the two years he had already spent in prison, but the court added a large fine, and sentenced Nanda to do community service for two years. The case inspired the Bollywood movie Jolly LLB (2013) starring Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani, [12] the Tollywood movie Sapthagiri LLB (2017) starring Saptagiri and Sai Kumar, and the Kollywood movie Manithan .

Priyadarshini Mattoo was a 25-year-old law student who was found raped and murdered at her house in New Delhi on 23 January 1996. On 17 October 2006, the Delhi High Court found Santosh Kumar Singh guilty on both counts of rape and murder, and on 30 October of the same year sentenced him to death. On 6 October 2010, the Supreme Court of India commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment. Santosh Kumar Singh, the son of an Inspector-General of Police, had earlier been acquitted by a trial court in 1999, and the High Court decision was widely perceived in India as a landmark reversal. This decision was overturned as the facts were not presented correctly in the lower court.

The Geeta and Sanjay Chopra kidnapping case was a kidnapping and murder crime in New Delhi in 1978. It involved the kidnapping and subsequent murder of siblings Geeta and Sanjay by Kuljeet Singh and Jasbir Singh. Although the children were kidnapped for ransom, they were killed after the kidnappers learned that their father was a naval officer, in the assumption that he was not wealthy. Both men initially admitted to raping Geeta before her murder. They later retracted their statements and forensic evidence could not confirm the rape. The two kidnappers were convicted and sentenced to death. The execution was carried out in 1982. Crime Patrol Dial 100 aired two episodes on Sony TV based on the story, 723 and 724 on Feb 28, 2018 and Mar 1, 2018. The case was also shown on the TV series Bhanwar, which was based on real-life court cases.

The Batla House encounter case was an armed Delhi Police operation to arrest terrorists of the terrorist outfit called 'Indian Mujahideen' (IM), hiding in a flat in the Batla House area of Jamia Nagar, Okhla, on 19 September 2008. The operation resulted in the deaths of two terrorists and one police officer, Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, with the remaining terrorists arrested. On 15 March 2021, one of the arrested Ariz Khan alias Junaid, was sentenced to death for the murder of Inspector Sharma.

<i>Jolly LLB</i> 2013 Indian film

Jolly LLB is a 2013 Indian Hindi-language dark comedy courtroom drama film written and directed by Subhash Kapoor and produced by Fox Star Studios. Released on 15 March 2013, the film stars Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani, Amrita Rao and Saurabh Shukla and revolves around the early life of Advocate Jagdish Tyagi, also known as Jolly, and focuses on his attempt to earn six innocent labourers their justice and his journey against the monopolistic behavior of the rich and judicial corruption. The storyline is inspired by the 1999 hit-and-run case of Sanjeev Nanda and a minor reference to Priyadarshini Mattoo case.

The 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder, commonly known as the Nirbhaya case, involved a rape and fatal assault that occurred on 16 December 2012 in Munirka, a neighbourhood in South Delhi. The incident took place when Jyoti Singh, a 22-year-old physiotherapy intern, was beaten, gang-raped, and tortured in a private bus in which she was travelling with her male friend, Avnindra Pratap Pandey. There were six others in the bus, including the driver, all of whom raped the woman and beat her friend. She was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi for treatment and transferred to Singapore eleven days after the assault, where she succumbed to her injuries 2 days later. The incident generated widespread national and international coverage and was widely condemned, both in India and abroad. Subsequently, public protests against the state and central governments for failing to provide adequate security for women took place in New Delhi, where thousands of protesters clashed with security forces. Similar protests took place in major cities throughout the country. Since Indian law does not allow the press to publish a rape victim's name, the victim was widely known as Nirbhaya, meaning "fearless", and her struggle and death became a symbol of women's resistance to rape around the world.

Peter Mukerjea, Rai, and Indrani's ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna confessed to the crime, while Indrani Mukerjea claimed that Sheena Bora is living in the United States but later admitted the truth.

<i>Manithan</i> (2016 film) 2016 Indian film

Manithan (transl. Human) is a 2016 Indian Tamil-language legal drama film directed by I. Ahmed. The film features an ensemble cast, including Udhayanidhi Stalin, Hansika Motwani, Aishwarya Rajesh, Radha Ravi, Prakash Raj, Vivek and Krishna Kumar. A remake of the Hindi film Jolly LLB (2013), which itself is loosely based on the 1999 Delhi hit-and-run case, the story revolves around a junior lawyer who, after a period of struggle and ridicule among colleagues, fights a case against a powerful supreme court lawyer. The film was released on 29 April 2016.

The State vs. Jolly LL.B 2, better known as Jolly LL.B 2, is a 2017 Indian Hindi-language black comedy film written and directed by Subhash Kapoor. Akshay Kumar plays the titular character, Jagdishwar Mishra, replacing the 2013 film's lead actor, Arshad Warsi, while Huma Qureshi, Annu Kapoor and Kumud Mishra, as well as Saurabh Shukla, who reprises his role from the 2013 original, star. The film is based in Lucknow, the story follows a lawyer who fights a case against a ruthless and powerful advocate to bring justice to the deceased victim of a fake encounter involving a corrupt police officer.

Jolly LLB is a series of Indian Hindi-language courtroom black comedy drama films, written and directed by Subhash Kapoor and produced by Fox Star Studios.

Devendra or Devinder, also known as Doctor Death, is an Indian serial killer and Ayurveda doctor who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2004 in Rajasthan after he was found guilty of several murders of taxi drivers between 2002 and 2004.
