Suresh Nanda (born 1 June 1941) is an Indian businessman, arms dealer and former officer in the Indian Navy. Nanda was a Lieutenant Commander in the Indian Navy, before starting his business career in the 1970s. [1] In his business career, Nanda's business interests have been the defence, hospitality, information technology and infrastructure industries. [2] [3] [4] During his career, Nanda consistently faced allegations of being one of India's most powerful arms dealers and in 2021, he was convicted by a special court for charges related to defence deals and bribery. Early life and education

Suresh Nanda was born to Admiral Sardarilal Mathradas Nanda and Sumitra Nanda in Karachi, British India. His father, Sardarilal Mathradas, had also served as the Chief of the Naval Staff of the Indian Navy. [7] Nanda studied in St. Columba's School, Delhi, the same school where notable personalities like Shah Rukh Khan, Rahul Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi and officers of the Indian Armed Forces like Rana Chhina, Arun Khetarpal and DS Hooda had studied. [8] [9]

Nanda graduated from the 16th course of the National Defence Academy and joined the Indian Navy. [1] He eventually reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander; however, Nanda left the Indian Navy while serving as his father's flag lieutenant because “his father’s looming personality ensured he never got credit for anything he did.” [10] [1]

Business career

Nanda began his business career after leaving the Indian Navy and by the 1970s, he joined his father's company, Crown Corporation. [1] His, father Sardarilal Mathradas, had set up the company after to re-employ retired naval personnel. [1] Nanda later took control of the Crown Corporation, and the company eventually became the Crown Group, with business interests in the defence, information technology and infrastructure industries. [2] [3] [11] He also founded and managed the company Dynatron Services, which focused on providing maintenance and after-sales service to for equipment sold in India. [12]

In 2000, Nanda stated in interviews that he founded the company C-1 India, an e-commerce company that focused on providing an online portal for procurement and tenders for Indian government departments and government companies. [13] C-1 India came under scrutiny in 2008 due to its links with Nanda. [13] Despite Vivek Agarwal, the company president, stating in 2008 that Nanda was longer involved with the company, the office address of C-1 India, D-5 Defence Colony, New Delhi, had a board outside listing C-1 India and Nanda's other companies: Crown Corporation and Dynatron Services. [13] The scrutiny of C-1 India focused on foreign fund transfers into the company's accounts and queries on how government companies, including the then Ordinance Factory Board, was doing business with the company despite Nanda being named an arms dealer. [13]

In 2003, Nanda entered the hotel industry by acquiring the Claridges Hotel in New Delhi and the Nabha Palace Hotel in Mussoorie. [4] [14] [15] Subsequently, he built Vivanta Surajkund which is managed by the Indian Hotels Company Limited. [16] In 2015, he expanded made his hotel business international and built Taj Dubai in Dubai. [17]

Arms dealing and conviction

Nanda has since the 1980s repeatedly faced allegations of being one of the three largest arms dealers in India and he was convicted by a special court in 2021 in connection with defence deals and bribery. [18] [5] Sudhir Choudhrie and Vipin Khanna faced allegations of being among the other two largest arms dealers, and the families of all three individuals, including Nanda's family, were reported to have had a controlling presence in the Indian defence industry since the 1980s. [5] [19] According to journalist Sandeep Unnithan in 2008, his company, the Crown Corporation was "associated with major defence deals concluded with the Soviet Union and later Russia...The booming arms trade of the ’80s and ’90s gave the Nandas all the trappings of plutocracy: a sprawling mansion on Grosvenor Square in London’s exclusive Mayfair district, a mansion on Prithviraj Road in the heart of Lutyens' Delhi and Bentleys and BMWs in the garage." [1] In 2006, alleged arms dealer Abhishek Verma claimed that he was being framed for the Scorpene deal scam by former Deputy Prime Minister of India L.K. Advani, who Verma further claimed was being assisted and funded by Nanda. [20]

Operation West End and Barak Missile scandal

In 2001, Operation West End, a sting operation conducted by Tehelka, named Nanda as one of the recipients of kickbacks in the acquisition of Barak 1 missiles, manufactured by Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI), by the Indian government. [1] [12] It was alleged in Operation West End, that Nanda paid a bribe to Samata Party President Jaya Jaitley. However, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), after their investigation of the Barak Missile scandal, filed a closure report due to lack of evidence. [21] [22] In Tehelka's conversation with retired Lieutenant Colonel V.K. Berry as part of the sting operation, he stated that Nanda was one of the three largest arms dealers. [23]

Conviction

In the First Information Report filed on 9 October 2005, the CBI mentioned large payments from the firm MTU Aero Engines, a supplier to IAI, into the bank accounts of Dynatron Services, a company managed by Suresh Nanda and his family members during the relevant period. [13] In March 2008, Nanda was arrested by the CBI, along with his son Sanjeev and chartered accountant Bipin Shah while reportedly trying to bribe an Income Tax Department (IT Department) officer Ashutosh Verma, the deputy director of IT (investigations), with Rs 10 crore to keep under wraps the report of a series of IT raids on his premises in 2007, which reportedly unearthed incriminating evidence of his involvement in the Barak Missile scandal. [1]

The CBI's evidence against Nanda included 134 incriminating telephone conversations and messages that were intercepted in 2008. [6] The CBI also produced as evidence, 32 incriminating conversations between Nanda and others, which included a prosecution witnesses that was related to discussions about a land deal in Goa. [6] The special court convicted all four for bribery charges in April 2021 and sentenced them to one-year of rigorous imprisonment. [6] [18]

Personal life

Nanda is married to Renu Nanda and has two children, Sanjeev and Sonali. [24] His daughter, Sonali, married businessman Peter Punj in 2002. [25]

In 1999, Nanda's 19-year-old son Sanjeev Nanda ran over and killed six people, including three police constables in a hit and run with his BMW in New Delhi. Tests showed that Sanjeev was drunk at the time of the accident. He was sentenced to five years in jail by a Delhi court; but the Delhi High Court allowed him to serve two years instead. The Delhi Police appeal the reduced sentence to the Supreme Court and sought a harsher 10-year imprisonment. However, the Supreme Court allowed Sanjeev Nanda to be released on account of his time served, required him to do two years of community service and pay a fine of 50 lakh rupees. [26]

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is the domestic crime investigating agency of India. It operates under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. Originally set up to investigate bribery and governmental corruption, in 1965 it received expanded jurisdiction to investigate breaches of central laws enforceable by the Government of India, multi-state organised crime, multi-agency or international cases. CBI is exempted from the provisions of the Right to Information Act. CBI is India's officially designated single point of contact to act as the liaison with Interpol. The CBI headquarter is located in CGO Complex, near Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

The Bofors scandal was a major weapons-contract political scandal that occurred between India and Sweden during the 1980s and 1990s, initiated by Indian National Congress politicians and implicating the Indian prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi, and several other members of the Indian and Swedish governments. These politicians were accused of receiving kickbacks from Bofors AB, an arms manufacturer principally financed by the Wallenberg family's Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken, for winning a bid to supply to India the company's 155 mm field howitzer – the sale of 410 field howitzers, and a supply contract for almost twice that amount, totalling a US$1.4 billion deal. It was the biggest arms deal ever in Sweden, and money marked for development projects was diverted to secure this contract at any cost. The investigations revealed flouting of rules and bypassing of institutions.

Rheinmetall Air Defence AG is a division of German armament manufacturer Rheinmetall, created when the company's Oerlikon Contraves unit was renamed on 1 January 2009 and integrated with Rheinmetall's other air-defence products. Oerlikon Contraves was a Swiss anti-aircraft artillery manufacturer famous for its adaptation of the 1916 20 mm Becker as the Oerlikon 20 mm autocannon design, which was used in the Second World War and still in use today. Copies and derivatives of these designs were made by German, French, British, and Japanese weapon manufacturers. Oerlikon Contraves was purchased by Rheinmetall in 1999.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Suresh Kalmadi</span> Indian politician

Suresh Kalmadi is an Indian politician and senior sports administrator. He is a former member of the Indian National Congress. He was a member of parliament from Pune until May 2014. He is alleged to have been involved in corrupt practices in relation to the 2010 Commonwealth Games during his tenure as president of Indian Olympic Association and chairman of Commonwealth Games 2010. He was charged with conspiracy, forgery, misconduct and under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and later arrested for the same in April 2014, but has not yet faced trial. In December 2016, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) named Suresh Kalmadi as its lifetime patron. However, he refused to accept the post until he was able to clear his name.

<i>Tehelka</i> Indian news magazine

Tehelka is an Indian news magazine known for its investigative journalism and sting operations. According to the British newspaper The Independent, the Tehelka was founded by Tarun Tejpal, Aniruddha Bahal and another colleague who worked together at the Outlook magazine after "an investor with deep pockets" agreed to underwrite their startup. Bahal left Tehelka in 2005 to start Cobrapost – an Indian news website, after which Tehelka was managed by Tejpal through 2013. In 2013, Tejpal stepped aside from Tehelka after being accused of sexual assault by his employee. Tehelka had cumulative losses of ₹66 crore (US$7.9 million) till 2013, while being majority owned and financed by Kanwar Deep Singh – an industrialist, a politician and a member of Indian parliament.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Barak 1</span> Short range surface-to-air missile

Barak is an Israeli surface-to-air missile (SAM) designed to be used as a ship-borne point-defense missile system against aircraft, anti-ship missiles, and UAVs.

Six people, including three police officers were killed by a speeding BMW E38 in the Lodhi Colony area of Delhi, India, on 10 January 1999. After following trails of the engine oil, police found the BMW at 50 Golf Links, the residence of Rajeev Gupta. It was then revealed that Sanjeev Nanda, grandson of Indian Navy Chief and son of Indian arms dealer Suresh Nanda was driving the car after returning from a party with Siddhartha Gupta, and Manik Kapoor.

The Barak Missile scandal was a case of alleged defence corruption relating to the purchase of Barak 1 Missile Systems by India. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigated the case and several people including R. K. Jain, former treasurer of the Samata Party were arrested. The CBI investigated the case and filed a First Information Report (FIR) on 10 October 2006, accusing politicians Defence Minister George Fernandes, Jaya Jaitly, R. K. Jain of receiving kickbacks from arms dealer and former Indian Navy officer Suresh Nanda. In 2007, businessman Vipin Khanna also faced allegations from the CBI of being involved in the scandal.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sardarilal Mathradas Nanda</span> Indian naval officer

Admiral Sardarilal Mathradas "Charles" Nanda, PVSM, AVSM was an Indian Navy admiral who served as the 6th Chief of the Naval Staff from 1 March 1970 until 28 February 1973. He led the Indian Navy during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 and successfully executed a naval blockade of both West and East Pakistan, helping India achieve an overwhelming victory during the war. For the important role he played in the war, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award. Nanda is recognised as one of the most notable commanders in the history of the Indian Navy.

Operation West End was a sting operation conducted in 2001 by Indian news magazine Tehelka to expose defence deals conducted by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Over a seven-and-half-month investigation, special correspondents of the magazine filmed several corrupt defence officials and politicians of NDA government, including the BJP President Bangaru Laxman, accepting bribes and discussing kickbacks. During Operation West End, individuals filmed in the sting operation made allegations and claims of who the most powerful arms dealers or agents in India were. Vipin Khanna, Sudhir Choudhrie and Suresh Nanda faced allegations and claims of being the three most powerful arms dealers in India.

The Scorpène deal scam was an Indian bribery scandal, in which USD 175 million were alleged to have been paid to the Government of India’s defence procurement decision makers by Thales, a French defence and aerospace company. In 2005, the Minster of Defence, Pranab Mukherjee, approved the deal to build Scorpène-class submarines, which was worth US$3 billion with Thales. However, in 2008, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), found no evidence of corruption in the deal. Scorpène-class submarines are now being built in India under a technology transfer agreement that was part of that contract.

Admiral Adhar Kumar Chatterji was an Admiral in the Indian Navy. He served as the 5th Chief of the Naval Staff, from 4 March 1966, until 28 February 1970. He was the first Indian officer of the navy to hold the rank of full Admiral. He is credited with the transformation of the Indian Navy. He made sweeping changes and restructured the navy, creating the Western and Eastern Naval Commands and the Western Fleet. Vipin Kumar Khanna was an Indian businessman, financier and army officer. Khanna had diverse business interests. The Claridges Delhi is a five star hotel in New Delhi with 132 rooms. It is located in Lutyens' Delhi in the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road. Built in 1955, the hotel's interior depicts historical artwork of royal India and is surrounded with lush green lawns and has been an important relic of independent India.

Arvind Khanna is an Indian politician, businessman, investor and philanthropist. Khanna is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which he joined in January 2022. He is a senior leader of the BJP and a prominent figure in BJP Punjab. He is serving as Vice-President of BJP Punjab since December 2022 and is a member of BJP Punjab's core committee and finance committee. He served as the member of legislative assembly (MLA) from Sangrur from 2002 to 2007 and the MLA from Dhuri from 2012 to 2014. From 1998 to 2015, Khanna was a member of the Indian National Congress (INC). During his time in the INC, Khanna served as General Secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), PPCC treasurer, President of the Punjab Youth Congress, and a member of the All India Congress Committee.
