On 11 November 2000, a fire in the tunnel of Gletscherbahn Kaprun 2 funicular in Kaprun, Austria, killed 155 people. The cause was traced to a faulty fan heater. Most of the victims were skiers on their way to the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. To date, this incident remains the deadliest rail disaster in Austrian history.

Stefan Petzner is an Austrian politician. He was a member of the right-wing Alliance for the Future of Austria (Bündnis Zukunft Österreich, BZÖ). Petzner is a former reporter and a student of journalism. Petzner directed the election campaigns in 2006 and 2008. In 2008 Petzner was appointed secretary general of the BZÖ.

Presidential elections were held in Austria on 25 April 2010, the twelfth election of an Austrian head of state since 1951. Josef Schaupper was an Austrian deaf alpine skier. He represented Austria at the Deaflympics in 1987, 1995 and 1999, winning 7 medals including a gold medal. He died in the Kaprun funicular railway fire on 11 November 2000, along with his fellow deaf skiers.

Gerald Grosz is an Austrian author, commentator, and politician. Formerly a member of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), he joined the Alliance for the Future of Austria (BZÖ) in 2005 and was elected to the National Council in the 2008 Austrian legislative election. He left office in 2013. The same year, he was elected federal chairman of the BZÖ, serving until 2015. Grosz was an independent candidate for President of Austria in the 2022 election.
