Jennifer Capriati successfully defended her title, defeating Martina Hingis 4–6, 7–6(9–7), 6–2 in the final to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2002 Australian Open. This was Capriati's second Australian Open title, and her third and final Grand Slam singles title. Capriati saved four match points in the final against Hingis to win the title.
Defending champion Venus Williams defeated her sister Serena Williams in the final, 6–2, 6–4, to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2001 US Open. She did not lose a set throughout the tournament.
Serena Williams defeated the two-time defending champion, her sister Venus Williams, in the final, 7–6(7–4), 6–3 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 2002 Wimbledon Championships. It was her first Wimbledon title, and the second step in completing her first "Serena Slam". She also claimed the WTA world No. 1 singles ranking for the first time after winning this tournament. She achieved the 'Channel Slam', a feat which she accomplished again in 2015. Serena did not lose a set during the tournament.
