Defending champion Jennifer Capriati defeated Martina Hingis in a rematch of the previous year's final, 4–6, 7–6(9–7), 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2002 Australian Open. It was her second Australian Open title and her third and last major singles title overall. Capriati saved four championship points en route to the title. This was Hingis' third consecutive defeat in an Australian Open final after three consecutive victories.

Defending champion Venus Williams defeated her sister Serena Williams in the final, 6–2, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2001 US Open. It was her fourth major singles title, and she did not lose a set during the tournament. The championship match was the first of nine major finals contested by the sisters, and the first US Open women's singles final to take place during American television prime time.

Květa Peschke and Francesca Schiavone were the defending champions, but Schiavone chose not to participate, and only Peschke competed that year.
Peschke partnered with Rennae Stubbs, but lost in the quarterfinals to Iveta Benešová and Galina Voskoboeva.

Daniela Hantuchová defeated Martina Hingis in the final, 6–3, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2002 Indian Wells Masters. It was her first WTA Tour singles title.

Nicole Arendt and Ai Sugiyama were the defending champions but they competed with different partners that year, Arendt with Liezel Huber and Sugiyama with Elena Tatarkova.

Martina Hingis and Mary Pierce were the defending champions but did not compete that year.

Julie Halard-Decugis and Ai Sugiyama were the defending champions but only Sugiyama competed that year with Nicole Arendt.

The 2003 AP Tourism Hyderabad Open was the first edition of the WTA tournament held in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India organized for women's professional tennis. It was held from 3 February until 9 February 2003 on outdoor hardcourts. Tamarine Tanasugarn won the singles title.

Elena Likhovtseva and Iroda Tulyaganova were the defending champions, but chose not to participate that year. In the final, wildcards Liezel Huber and Sania Mirza defeated 3rd seeds Li Ting and Sun Tiantian 7–6(7–1), 6–4 to win their title.

Mahesh Bhupathi and Elena Likhovtseva were the defending champions but decided not to play together. Bhupathi played with Paola Suárez and lost in third round to Nenad Zimonjić and Iroda Tulyaganova, while Likhovtseva competed with Bob Bryan and lost in second round to Andy Ram and Anastasia Rodionova.

Elena Dementieva and Janette Husárová were the defending champions, but had different outcomes. Dementieva had to withdraw due to a left foot strain, while Husárová teamed up with Elena Likhovtseva and reached the semifinals.

Cara Black and Elena Likhovtseva were the defending champions, but lost in semifinals to Conchita Martínez and Patricia Tarabini.

Janette Husárová and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario were the defending champions, but did not compete this year.

Cătălina Cristea and Irina Selyutina were the defending champions, but both players decided to compete in Berlin at the same week.

Eva Martincová and Elena Wagner were the defending champions, but Wagner did not compete this year. Martincová teamed up with Émilie Loit and lost in first round to Meike Babel and Laurence Courtois.
