The 2007 floods of Africa was reported by the UN to be one of the worst flooding events in recorded history.[ citation needed ] The flooding started with rains on September 14,2007 local time. Over 14 countries had been affected in the continent of Africa,250 people were reported to have been killed and 1.5 million were otherwise impacted. The UN had issued warnings of water borne diseases and locust infestations.
As many as 400,000 were homeless with at least 20 people dead. Crops and livestock were washed away,with some communities completely destroyed.
Sixty-four people were reported killed.
Seventeen people were reported dead. In the Afar Region,the Awash River flooded caused a dam to collapse. Around 4,500 people were stranded,surrounded by water.
As many as 150,000 people were displaced and 21 reported dead. There were 170 schools under water.
Eighteen people were reported dead and 500 residences were washed away by floods.
Five bridges had collapsed and 250 residences were washed away.

The Valigonda rail disaster occurred on 29 October 2005 near the town of Valigonda,south of Hyderabad in the Indian state of Telangana. A flash flood swept away a small rail bridge,and a "Delta Fast Passenger" train traveling on it derailed at the broken section of the line,killing at least 114 people and injuring over 200.
The War in Darfur,also nicknamed the Land Cruiser War,was a major armed conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan that began in February 2003 when the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) rebel groups began fighting against the government of Sudan,which they accused of oppressing Darfur's non-Arab population. The government responded to attacks by carrying out a campaign of ethnic cleansing against Darfur's non-Arabs. This resulted in the death of hundreds of thousands of civilians and the indictment of Sudan's president,Omar al-Bashir,for genocide,war crimes,and crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court.
A series of large floods occurred in parts of the United Kingdom during the summer of 2007. The worst of the flooding occurred across Scotland on 14 June;East Yorkshire and the Midlands on 15 June;Yorkshire,the Midlands,Gloucestershire,Herefordshire and Worcestershire on 25 June;and Gloucestershire,Herefordshire,Worcestershire,Oxfordshire,Berkshire and South Wales on 28 July 2007.
The 2009 West Africa floods are a natural disaster that began in June 2009 as a consequence of exceptionally heavy seasonal rainfall in large areas of West Africa. Several rivers,including the Pendjari,Niger,Volta and Senegal rivers,broke their banks,causing destruction of houses,bridges,roads and crops. The floods are reported to have affected 940,000 people across 12 countries,including Burkina Faso,Benin,Ghana,Niger,Senegal,Guinea,and caused the deaths of at least 193 people. In Burkina Faso,one of the most affected countries,150,000 people fled their homes,mostly in the capital Ouagadougou where rainfall in one day was equal to 25% of normal annual rainfall for the whole country.
Global weather activity of 2007 profiles the major worldwide weather events,including blizzards,ice storms,tornadoes,tropical cyclones,and other weather events,from January 1,2007,to December 31,2007. Winter storms are events in which the dominant varieties of precipitation are formed during cold temperatures;they include snow or sleet,or a rainstorm where ground temperatures are cold enough to allow ice,including freezing rain,to form. Thehy may be marked by strong wind,thunder,lightning thunderstorms,heavy precipitation,including ice storm,wind transporting some substance through the atmosphere,including dust storms,snowstorms,and hail storms. Other major non winter events such as large dust storms,hurricanes,cyclones,tornados,gales,flooding,and rainstorms are also caused by such phenomena.
The 2010 Nigerien floods were floods across Niger which left over 111,000 people homeless. Niger was already suffering acute food shortages following prolonged drought in the Sahel region. As of 24 August 2010,at least 6 to 8 people had died. The Niger river was pushed to its highest levels in 80 years. The floods subsequently spread along the River Niger into Nigeria,Ghana,Burkina Faso,Togo and Benin over the next few months. Later storms also brewed up in the CAR,Morocco and northern Algeria.
The Second Ivorian Civil War broke out in March 2011 when the crisis in Ivory Coast escalated into full-scale military conflict between forces loyal to Laurent Gbagbo,the President of Ivory Coast since 2000,and supporters of the internationally recognised president-elect Alassane Ouattara. After months of unsuccessful negotiations and sporadic violence between supporters of the two sides,the crisis entered a critical stage as Ouattara's forces seized control of most of the country with the help of the UN,with Gbagbo entrenched in Abidjan,the country's largest city. International organizations have reported numerous instances of human rights violations by both sides,in particular in the city of Duékouéwhere Ouattara's forces killed hundreds of people. Overall casualties of the war are estimated around 3000. The UN and French forces took military action,with the stated objective to protect their forces and civilians. France's forces arrested Gbagbo at his residence on 11 April 2011.
The 2011 China floods were a series of floods from June to September 2011 that occurred in central and southern parts of the People's Republic of China. They were caused by heavy rain that inundated portions of 12 provinces,leaving other provinces still suffering a prolonged drought,and with direct economic losses of nearly US$6.5 billion.
The 1985 Puerto Rico floods produced the deadliest single landslide on record in North America,that killed at least 130 people in the Mameyes neighborhood of barrio Portugués Urbano in Ponce. The floods were the result of a westward-moving tropical wave that emerged off the coast of Africa on September 29. The system moved into the Caribbean Sea on October 5 and produced torrential rainfall across Puerto Rico,peaking at 31.67 in (804 mm) in Toro Negro State Forest. Two stations broke their 24-hour rainfall records set in 1899. The rains caused severe flooding in the southern half of Puerto Rico,which isolated towns,washed out roads,and caused rivers to exceed their banks. In addition to the deadly landslide in Mameyes,the floods washed out a bridge in Santa Isabel that killed several people. The storm system caused about $125 million in damage and 180 deaths,which prompted a presidential disaster declaration. The tropical wave later spawned Tropical Storm Isabel.
2012 Himalayan flash floods are the floods that occurred on the midnight of 3 August 2012 in the Himalayan region of Northern Indian states. Many were dead and missing. Many places were affected. Landslides and flash floods were triggered by a sudden cloudburst which left 31 people dead while 40 are reported to be missing.
The 2012 Nigeria floods began in early July 2012. It killed 363 people and displaced over 2.1 million people as of 5 November 2012. According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA),30 of Nigeria's 36 states were affected by the floods and the two most affected areas were Kogi and Benue States. The floods were termed as the worst in 40 years,and affected an estimated total of seven million people. The estimated damages and losses caused by the floods was N2.6 trillion.
In August 2013,Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan experienced heavy rain that led to flash flooding. More than 180 died as a result of the floods.
On the morning of August 14,2017,significant mudflow events occurred in and around the capital city of Freetown in Sierra Leone. Following three days of torrential rainfall,mass wasting of mud and debris damaged or destroyed hundreds of buildings in the city,killing 1,141 people and leaving more than 3,000 homeless.
Widespread monsoon flooding occurred in the South Asian countries of Afghanistan,Bangladesh,India,Nepal and Pakistan from July through September 2017. More than 45 million people were affected by the floods,including 16 million children.
Storm Dennis was a European windstorm which,in February 2020,became one of the most intense extratropical cyclones ever recorded,reaching a minimum central pressure of 920 millibars. The thirteenth named storm of the 2019–20 European windstorm season,Dennis affected the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom less than a week after Storm Ciara,exacerbating the impacts from that storm amidst ongoing flooding in the latter country.
Hispaniola is an island in the Caribbean,with the second largest size throughout all of the Caribbean. Throughout the centuries,since reliable records began,hundreds of hurricanes and tropical cyclones have affected Haiti and the Dominican Republic,the two countries that share the island. The most recent tropical cyclone to affect Hispaniola was Hurricane Franklin in August 2023.
In 2021,Niger has been affected by subsequent floods due to heavy rains,causing several deaths and widespread damage nationwide. Niamey is the most affected area. At least 62 people died,60 were injured and 105,690 individuals have been affected by the floods. Most fatalities were reported in Maradi Region with 18 deaths.
The 2022 Nigeria floods affected many parts of the country. From the Federal Government Data,the floods had displaced over 1.4 million people,killed over 603 people,and injured more than 2,400 people. About 82,035 houses had been damaged,and 332,327 hectares of land had also been affected.
The Derna dam collapses were the catastrophic failures of two dams in Derna,Libya on the night of 10–11 September 2023,in the aftermath of Storm Daniel. The dam collapses released an estimated 30 million cubic meters of water,causing flooding downstream as the Wadi Derna overflowed its banks. The floods partially destroyed the city of Derna. As of 18 September,estimates for the number of casualties range from 5,300 to 20,000 people. The event was the second-deadliest dam failure in history,after the 1975 Banqiao Dam failure in China.
