The Grand Prix of Long Beach is an IndyCar Series race held on a street circuit in downtown Long Beach, California. Christopher Pook is the founder of the event. It was the premier race on the CART/Champ Car calendar from 1996 to 2008, and the 2008 race was the final Champ Car series race prior to the formal unification and end of the open-wheel "split" between CART and IRL. Since 2009, the race has been part of the unified IndyCar Series. The race is typically held in April. Since his retirement from active racing, Andretti has owned Andretti Autosport, which has won four IndyCar Series championships and five Indianapolis 500 races.
George Dario Marino Franchitti, MBE is a Scottish former racing driver and current motorsport commentator. He is a four time IndyCar Series champion, a three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 as well as a winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona (2008).
Marco Michael Andretti is an American auto racing driver who drives the No. 98 car for Andretti Herta Autosport part time in the IndyCar Series. He is the third generation of the famous Andretti racing family.

The 87th Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana on Sunday, May 25, 2003. Two-time defending champion Hélio Castroneves won the pole position and was trying to become the first driver in Indy history to win three in a row. With 31 laps to go, however, Castroneves was passed by his Penske teammate Gil de Ferran, and the duo finished 1st–2nd, with de Ferran winning his first Indy 500. The race was sanctioned by the Indy Racing League and was part of the 2003 IndyCar Series season.

The race is famous for the fierce battle in the closing laps, as race winner Al Unser, Jr. held off second place Scott Goodyear for the victory by 0.043 seconds, the closest finish in Indy history. Unser, Jr. became the first second-generation driver to win the Indy 500, following in the footsteps of his father Al Unser, Sr. He also became the third member of the famous Unser family to win the race.

The Acura ARX-01, later known as the HPD ARX-01 is a series of Le Mans Prototype built for sports car racing, specifically in the American Le Mans Series, Le Mans Series, and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It is the first purpose-built race car by the Acura division of Honda Motor Company, part of their multi-year program to eventually compete in endurance race. The car debuted in 2007 in the American Le mans Series before expanding to customers in Europe. Over the years various specifications of the ARX-01 chassis have been developed, each signified by a letter suffix. In 2010 Acura withdrew their name from the program and Honda Performance Development which developed the car for Acura continued the program into 2011.

The race was won by Dario Franchitti, ahead of Dan Wheldon and Marco Andretti. Tony Kanaan, who had started in the final position, ran as high as second during the race before finishing eleventh.

Since 2009, the race has served as the season opener, with the exception of 2010, when it was the second race of the season, 2020, when the race instead served as the final race of the season, and 2021 when it was the second race of the season. The race is held annually in the spring, currently in March.
The 2021 NTT IndyCar Series is the 26th season of the IndyCar Series and the 110th official championship season of American open wheel racing. The premier event will be the 2021 Indianapolis 500. It will be the second year under Penske management after they took over in late 2019. Scott Dixon is set to enter his 21st season competing for a National Championship as the defending champion.
