Marc Basseng (born 12 December 1978 in Engelskirchen) is a German racing driver.

Career

Basseng began his career in karting. In 1997 he began competing in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany for the UPS Porsche Junior Team, finishing third in the 1998 standings. [1] He raced in the Renault Sport Clio Trophy in 2001 and 2002 and won the German Clio Cup in 2003.

In 2004, Basseng began to compete in the VLN Nürburgring Endurance Series, where he has claimed 26 overall wins. [2] The driver also competed part-time at the FIA GT3 European Championship, FIA GT Championship, Le Mans Series, American Le Mans Series and ADAC GT Masters. In 2008, the Belgian raced full-time at the American Le Mans Series in a Porsche 911 for Farnbacher Loles and VICI Racing.

He began racing in the new FIA GT1 World Championship in 2010 for the All-Inkl.com Münnich Motorsport team, for which he also serves as team manager. On 26 July 2010, Marc Basseng achieved the lap record in a Pagani Zonda R on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. [3] In 2011 he finished 5th in the standings for Münnich, sharing his ride with Markus Winkelhock. In 2012 he claimed the world championship with Winkelhock, managing to win a race and finishing 10 times in the podium.

Basseng moved with Münnich Motorsport to the World Touring Car Championship for 2013. [4] As he was the reigning FIA GT1 World Champion he was ruled to be ineligible for the Yokohama Independents' Trophy. [5] He finished 13th overall at the end of the season, with a season best of 4th place at Monza.

The 2012 FIA GT1 World Championship was the third and final season of the SRO Group's FIA GT1 World Championship, an auto racing series for grand tourer cars. The 2012 championship, which opened to GT3 Series Grand Touring cars, featured two titles awarded to the highest scoring competitors over the course of the season: the GT1 World Championship for Drivers and the GT1 World Championship for Teams. The series underwent regulation changes in 2012 with GT3 cars replacing the GT1 category vehicles used in the previous two seasons of the World Championship. Hexis AMR, now under the title Hexis Racing, returned as the defending Teams' World Champions, while German drivers Michael Krumm and Lucas Luhr didn't return to the series to defend their Drivers' World Championships.

The 2012 FIA GT1 Zolder round is an auto racing event held at the Circuit Zolder, Heusden-Zolder, Belgium on 20–22 April 2012, and is the second round of the 2012 FIA GT1 World Championship season. The 2012 FIA GT1 Algarve round was an auto racing event held on 7–8 July 2012 at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão, Portugal. The event consisted of two races, the Qualifying Race and the Championship Race, each of which lasted one hour.
