Maria Sharapova won her second French Open title and fifth major title overall by defeating first-time finalist Simona Halep 6–4, 6–7(5–7), 6–4, to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2014 French Open. In a match that lasted over three hours, it was the first time since 2001 that the final went to three sets. Halep became the first Romanian to reach the final since Virginia Ruzici in 1980.
Two-time defending champion Serena Williams successfully defended her title, defeating Caroline Wozniacki in the final, 6–3, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2014 US Open. It was her Open Era-record-equaling sixth US Open title and 18th major singles title overall, equaling Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert's tally. She did not lose a set during the tournament for a record-equaling third time, and did not lose more than three games in any set.

Jeļena Ostapenko defeated Simona Halep in the final, 4–6, 6–4, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2017 French Open. This was Ostapenko's first WTA Tour-level singles title. She became the first Latvian player, male or female, to win a Grand Slam singles tournament, the youngest woman to win the French Open since 1997 and the first woman since Barbara Jordan at the 1979 Australian Open to win a Grand Slam as her first tour-level singles title. Ostapenko was the first unseeded woman to win a Grand Slam since Kim Clijsters in the 2009 US Open. She was also the first unseeded woman to reach the French Open final since Mima Jaušovec in 1983, the first unseeded woman to win the French Open since Margaret Scriven in 1933, and as well as the lowest-ranked (47) since computer rankings began in 1975.

Naomi Osaka defeated Serena Williams in the final, 6–2, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2018 US Open. She became the first Japanese to win a major singles title. She lost only one set during the tournament, to Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round. Following the win, Osaka also made her top 10 rankings debut.
World No. 1 Simona Halep won her first Grand Slam title, defeating Sloane Stephens in the final, 3–6, 6–4, 6–1 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2018 French Open. She became the second Romanian woman to win a Grand Slam title in Women's Singles after the 1978 French Open champion Virginia Ruzici. She also became the sixth woman to win both the senior and junior title, having won the latter in 2008.
