The President of the Portuguese Republic is the executive head of state of Portugal. The powers, functions and duties of prior presidential offices, and their relation with the Prime Minister and cabinets have over time differed with the various Portuguese constitutions.

Aníbal António Cavaco Silva, GCC, GColL, is an economist who was the 19th President of Portugal, in office from 9 March 2006 to 9 March 2016. He had been previously Prime Minister of Portugal from 6 November 1985 to 28 October 1995. His 10-year tenure was the longest of any prime minister since António de Oliveira Salazar, and he was the first Portuguese prime minister to win an absolute parliamentary majority under the current constitutional system. He is best known for leading Portugal into the European Union.

Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played with a spherical ball between two teams of eleven players. It is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the world's most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field called a pitch with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by moving the ball beyond the goal line into the opposing goal.

The 2007–08 Primeira Liga was the 74th edition of the Primeira Liga, the top professional league for Portuguese association football clubs. It started on 17 August 2007 and ended on 11 May 2008, with the fixtures announced on 12 July 2007. Porto were the two-time defending champions, having won their 22nd title the previous season, and secured a third consecutive title for the second time in their history.

Francisco Martins Rodrigues Portuguese politician

Francisco Martins Rodrigues was a Portuguese anti-Fascist resistant and the founder of the Portuguese Marxist-Leninist Committee in 1964, which was one of the country's first major Marxist-Leninist organizations. Rodrigues was imprisoned numerous times by the PIDE, including a long prison term between 1965 and the Carnation Revolution in April 1974. He was also member of the Portuguese Communist Party until 1963, which he left because of disagreements about the pro-soviet views of the Party.

The Handball League Cup or Taça da Liga de Andebol was a handball competition disputed by the top clubs of the Liga Portuguesa de Andebol. Founded in 2003 by the Liga Portuguesa de Andebol (LPA), it ran for six years. The first two editions were won by FC Porto, followed by Belenenses and SL Benfica in 2006 and 2007. The final two editions were won by Porto and Benfica. Sporting has the most finals lost with three. In 2009, the LPA ended and the League Cup was replaced by Portuguese Handball Super Cup.

Marcel Keizer is a Dutch football coach and former player and currently coach of Sporting CP.

The 2008 Taça de Portugal Final was the final match of the 2007–08 Taça de Portugal, the 68th season of the Taça de Portugal, the premier Portuguese football cup competition organized by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). The match was played on 18 May 2008 at the Estádio Nacional in Oeiras, and opposed two Primeira Liga sides: Porto and Sporting CP. Sporting CP defeated Porto 2–0, thanks to two extra-time goals from Brazilian striker Rodrigo Tiuí which would give Sporting CP their fifteenth Taça de Portugal.
