In February, Portugal participated in the 2014 Winter Olympics. In association football, the first-tier league season, the 2013–14 Primeira Liga, ended on 11 May. For the second-tier league season, see 2013–14 Segunda Liga; for the third-tier league season, see 2013–14 Campeonato Nacional. The 2013–14 Taça da Liga ended on 26 April with the 2014 Taça da Liga Final. The 2014–15 Taça da Liga will begin on 26 July. The 2013–14 Taça de Portugal ended on 18 May with the 2014 Taça de Portugal Final.
Futebol Clube do Porto, MHIH, OM, commonly known as FC Porto or simply Porto, is a Portuguese professional sports club based in Porto. It is best known for the professional football team playing in the Primeira Liga, the top flight of Portuguese football. Founded on 28 September 1893, Porto is one of the "Big Three" teams in Portugal – together with Lisbon-based rivals Benfica and Sporting CP, that have appeared in every season of the Primeira Liga since its establishment in 1934. They are nicknamed Dragões (Dragons), for the mythical creature atop the club's crest, and Azuis e brancos (Blue-and-whites), for the shirt colours. Those colours are in stripes with blue shorts. The club supporters are called portistas. Since 2003, Porto have played their home matches at the Estádio do Dragão, which replaced the previous 51-year-old ground, the Estádio das Antas. Porto was sentenced for match fixing in 2008 but this decision was reverted in 2017.
Sport Lisboa e Benfica, commonly known as Benfica, is a professional football club based in Lisbon, Portugal, that competes in the Primeira Liga, the top flight of Portuguese football.
Grupo Desportivo Estoril Praia, commonly known as Estoril, is a Portuguese sports club from Estoril, Cascais, Lisbon. Founded on 17 May 1939, its football team currently plays in Primeira Liga and hold home games at the Estádio António Coimbra da Mota, with a seating capacity of 8,015. As a sports club, Estoril has departments for football, futsal and basketball.
The Taça da Liga, known outside Portugal as Portuguese League Cup, is an annual football club competition organised by the Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional (LPFP) for teams competing in the Primeira Liga and LigaPro, the top two tiers of Portuguese football. Unlike Portugal's other domestic cup competition, the Taça de Portugal, the winners do not qualify for European competitions.

Eusébio da Silva FerreiraGCIH GCM was a Mozambican-born Portuguese footballer who played as a striker. He is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time and S.L. Benfica's greatest ever player. During his professional career, he scored 733 goals in 745 matches. Nicknamed the Black Panther, the Black Pearl, or o Rei, he was famous for his speed, technique, athleticism and his ferocious right-footed shot, making him a prolific goalscorer.

The 2012–13 Taça da Liga was the sixth edition of the Taça da Liga, the Portuguese football league cup competition. It was organized by the Portuguese League for Professional Football (LPFP) and contested between the 32 clubs competing in the 2012–13 Primeira Liga and 2012–13 Segunda Liga, the top two tiers of Portuguese football. The first matches were played on 28 July 2012, and the final was played on Estádio Cidade de Coimbra in Coimbra, on 13 April 2013.
The 2013–14 Taça da Liga was the seventh edition of the Taça da Liga, a Portuguese football knockout competition organized by the Portuguese League for Professional Football (LPFP). It was contested by the 33 clubs competing in the 2013–14 Primeira Liga and 2013–14 Segunda Liga, the top two tiers and only professional leagues in Portuguese football. The competition began in July 2013 with first-round matches and concluded on 7 May 2014, with the final at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, where Benfica defeated Rio Ave 2–0 to win a fifth Taça da Liga title.
The 2013–14 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 110th season in existence and the club's 80th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal, Taça da Liga, the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, and the knockout phase in the UEFA Europa League. Benfica qualified for the Champions League by coming second in the previous Primeira Liga.

A total of 154 clubs compete in this edition, including all teams from the top four tiers of the Portuguese football league system – excluding reserve or B teams, which are not eligible – and representatives of the fifth-tier District leagues and cups.
