VMRO-DPMNE political party in North Macedonia

The Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization – Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity, simplified as VMRO-DPMNE, is one of the two major parties in North Macedonia, the other being the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM).

Social Democratic Union of Macedonia political party in North Macedonia

The Social Democratic Union of Macedonia is a social-democratic political party, and the main centre-left party in North Macedonia. The Social Democratic Union of Macedonia was founded on 20 April 1991 at the 11th Congress of SKM-PDP. Branko Crvenkovski was elected as the party's first president. Its current leader is Zoran Zaev. The Social Democratic Union of Macedonia is a member of the Progressive Alliance and an associate affiliate of the Party of European Socialists (PES). SDSM is a centre-left positioned political party with social-democratic ideology. The party supported a practical solution to the Macedonian naming dispute with Greece, which succeeded under the Prespa agreement.

Democratic Union for Integration political party

The Democratic Union for Integration is the largest Albanian political party in North Macedonia and the third largest political party in the country. It was formed immediately after the country's 2001 conflict between the National Liberation Army (NLA) and the Macedonian Security Forces. The NLA leader Ali Ahmeti became party president.

The Socialist Party of Macedonia is a political party in North Macedonia founded on 22 September 1990 as a successor to the Socialist Alliance of Working People of Yugoslavia. The SPM proclaims itself to be a left-wing democratic socialist party. The SPM was part of the coalition governments from 1992 to 1998, led by the SDSM. The party's first leader was Kiro Popovski and its current leader is Ljubisav Ivanov-Dzingo.

Nikola Gruevski Macedonian politician

Nikola Gruevski is a politician from North Macedonia who served as Prime Minister of the then-Macedonia from 2006 to 2016, and led the VMRO-DPMNE party from 2003 to 2017. Previously, he was Minister of Finance in the VMRO-DPMNE government led by Ljubčo Georgievski until 2002.

2009 Macedonian presidential election election

Presidential elections were held in the Republic of Macedonia in 2009. The first round was held on 22 March, alongside local elections. As no candidate received more than 50% of the vote, a run-off round was held on 5 April 2009, which was won by Gjorge Ivanov of the center-right VMRO-DPMNE party. Incumbent President Branko Crvenkovski did not stand for re-election.

2014 Macedonian general election

General elections were held in the Republic of Macedonia in April 2014 to elect the President and members of parliament. The first round of the presidential elections were held on 13 April, with incumbent president Gjorge Ivanov finishing first with 53% of the vote. However, as he did not receive the support of 50% of all registered voters, a second round was held on 27 April, alongside parliamentary elections, with Ivanov and the ruling coalition led by VMRO-DPMNE claiming victory as Ivanov was elected president and the VMRO-DPMNE won 61 of the 123 seats in the Assembly.

Kumanovo clashes

A shootout which erupted during a raid between Macedonian police and an armed group identifying itself as the National Liberation Army (NLA) occurred on 9 May 2015 in the northern Macedonian town of Kumanovo. During the shootings, eight Macedonian policemen and 10 of the militants were killed, while 37 officers were wounded and hospitalized. The shooting ended on 10 May 2015, in an operation by the Macedonian police and armed forces, in which 28 men were arrested and charged with "terrorism-related charges" by the Macedonian authorities.

In May 2015, protests occurred in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia, against the incumbent Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and his government. Protests began following charges being brought up against Zoran Zaev, the Social Democratic opposition leader, who responded by alleging that Gruevski had 20,000 Macedonian officials and other figures wiretapped, and covered up the murder of a young man by a police officer in 2011. A protest with up to 2,000 attendees occurred on May 5, seeing clashes between activists and police.

2016 Macedonian parliamentary election

Early parliamentary elections were held in Macedonia on 11 December 2016, having originally been planned for 24 April and later 5 June. The Electoral Commission called a re-run for 25 December 2016 in Tearce and Gostivar, though in Gostivar it was called off after the VMRO-DPME filed a lawsuit against the decision, and in Tearce the outcome was unchanged.

2016 Macedonian protests political demonstrations nationwide in Macedonia

In April 2016, protests began in the Republic of Macedonia against the incumbent President Gjorgje Ivanov and the government led by the interim Prime Minister Emil Dimitriev from the ruling VMRO-DPMNE party. Referred to by some as the Colorful Revolution, the protests have started after the controversial decision by President Gjorgje Ivanov to stop the investigation against former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and dozens of politicians who were allegedly involved in a wiretapping scandal. The demonstrations were organized by "Protestiram" and supported from coalition led by the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia, and other opposition parties, also the newly formed Levica demanding that the government resigns for the formation of a technical government, and that the parliamentary elections planned for 5 June 2016 are cancelled, on the grounds that the conditions for free and transparent elections are not in place. The government and its supporters, who have organized pro-government rallies, maintain that the elections on June 5 are the only solution to the political crisis, with some observers blaming the opposition for creating a "Ukraine scenario" in Macedonia.

2019 North Macedonian presidential election

Presidential elections were held in North Macedonia on 21 April 2019. Three candidates were on the ballot in the first round; Stevo Pendarovski of the ruling Social Democratic Union of Macedonia, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova of the nationalist opposition VMRO-DPMNE party, and Blerim Reka, an independent representing the Albanian minority. The first round did not result in an absolute majority for any candidate, but Pendarovski won against Siljanovska-Davkova in the second round on 5 May.
