Defending champions Hong Kong played against Guangdong at Yuexiushan Stadium on 1 January in the first leg and the second leg was played at Mong Kok Stadium on 4 January. Hong Kong football representative team represented Hong Kong Team this year instead of Hong Kong League XI and 2008 Chinese third-tier league runners-up Guangdong Sunray Cave replaced Guangzhou FC as Guangdong Team to participate in this tournament. Hong Kong won 5–4 on aggregate and were crowned their 13th Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup champions.

Hong Kong Senior Challenge Shield 2009–10, officially named as Canbo Senior Shield due to the competition's sponsorship by Guangdong Canbo Electrical, was the 108th season of one of the Asian oldest football knockout competition, Hong Kong Senior Challenge Shield. The 87th 2013 Lunar New Year Cup, also known as the China Mobile Satellite Communication Cup due to sponsorship reason, is the annual football event held in Hong Kong in Lunar New Year. The name of this event was changed back to Lunar New Year Cup after two editions of Asian Challenge Cup were held in 2011 and 2012.

The 36th Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup will be held on 29 December 2013 and 1 January 2014. The first leg will be played at Mong Kok Stadium with the second leg to take place at Huizhou Olympic Stadium.

The 2014–15 season is the 113th season of competitive football in Hong Kong, starting in July 2014 and ending in June 2015.

The 40th Guangdong–Hong Kong Cup was held on 4 and 7 January 2018. Hong Kong won their first title in five years after beating Guangdong in the penalty shoot-out.

The 41st Guangdong–Hong Kong Cup was held on 6 and 9 January 2019. Hong Kong retained the trophy, beating Guangdong 5–2 on aggregate.
