The 2012 Tour de Singkarak was the 4th edition of the Tour de Singkarak, one of Indonesian official tournament series of Union Cycliste International (UCI). [1] It started on 4 June in Sawahlunto [2] and ended in the Padang on 10 June. [3] Like previous edition, the international cyclists competed in 7 stages over 7 days, which the routes has been surveyed by Amaury Sport Organization which surveyed also Tour de France routes. [4] Covering a distance of 854 kilometres [5] with prize money total to IDR 1 billion. [6] [7] [8] The route across Lake Singkarak on stage 2 and stage 5.
Starting in Sawahlunto [9] and finishing in provincial capital Padang, the race visited 14 regencies and cities in the West Sumatra: Sawahlunto, Payakumbuh, Lima Puluh Kota, Sijunjung, Tanah Datar, Padang Panjang, Pariaman, Agam, Solok, Solok Regency, Pariaman, Pesisir Selatan, and Padang. [10]
Different from organization of the Tour de Singkarak in previous years which always start from the city of Padang, this year's Tour de Singkarak actually began in Sawahlunto, one of the best old city in Indonesia. [9] While the city of Padang as the capital of West Sumatra, as a finish place Tour de Singkarak, after previously placed in Lake Singkarak. However, Lake Singkarak and other famous objects remain a part of this year trajectory pathway, which length is 854 km. These differences occurred caused this championship has cooperated with the Amaury Sport Organization or ASO, organizers of the Tour de France in France. [11]

West Sumatra is a province of Indonesia. It is located on the west coast of the island of Sumatra and includes the Mentawai Islands off that coast. The province has an area of 42,119.54 km2 (16,262.45 sq mi), with a population of 5,534,472 at the 2020 census. The official estimate at mid 2022 was 5,640,629. West Sumatra borders the Indian Ocean to the west, as well as the provinces of North Sumatra to the north, Riau to the northeast, Jambi to the southeast, and Bengkulu to the south. The province is subdivided into twelve regencies and seven cities. It has relatively more cities than other provinces outside of Java, although several of them are relatively low in population compared with cities elsewhere in Indonesia. Padang is the province's capital and largest city.

The Padang metropolitan area is the third most populous metropolitan area in Sumatra with a population of over 1.4 million. Lake Singkarak is a lake in West Sumatra, Indonesia. It is located between the regencies of Tanah Datar and Solok Regency. It has an area of 107.8 km2, being approximately 21 km long and 7 km wide. The natural outlet for excess water is the Ombilin river which flows eastward to the Strait of Malacca. A hydroelectric project, however, has diverted most of the lake outflow to the Anai river which flows westward into the Indian Ocean near Padang. This Singkarak power station uses this water to generate power for the West Sumatra and Riau provinces. A species of fish called ikan bilih is endemic to the lake, and is harvested for human consumption. A railway line, which connects Padang and Sawahlunto-Sijunjung, skirts the length of the lake on the eastern side.
Sawahlunto is a city in Western Sumatra province, Indonesia, and lies 90 kilometres from Padang, the provincial capital. Sawahlunto is known as the site for the oldest coal mining site in Southeast Asia. Sawahlunto is geographically located in a narrow valley along the Bukit Barisan mountains, and surrounded by several hills, namely Bukit Polan, Bukit Pari, and Bukit Mato. The town has a land area of 273.45 sq. km, and had a population of 56,866 at the 2010 Census, 60,136 at the 2015 Census and 65,138 at the 2020 Census.

Tour de Singkarak is an annual professional road bicycle racing stage race held in West Sumatra, Indonesia, and named after the Lake Singkarak. First staged in 2009, Tour de Singkarak is classified by the Union Cycling International (UCI) as a 2.2 category race as part of the UCI Asia Tour. It covers more than 1267 kilometres — from/to Padang passing around lake Singkarak and runs through inland West Sumatran cities — and lasted for a week and held annually. This exciting tour across the picturesque West Sumatra countryside's scenic landscapes, comprising beaches, blue lakes, and numerous hairpin bends, as they climb up to the foot of the volcanoes. The total prize money is IDR 1,000,000,000 (US$100,000). BNI-Maybank was the platinum sponsor of the Tour De Singkarak since 2009 with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Indonesia. TDS is the biggest international cycling race in Indonesia, having the fifth largest audience in the world, it attracted many top international cyclists to participate in this world famous annual sports event.
The Ganting Grand Mosque is a Sunni mosque located in Ganting, Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Construction began in 1805, making it the oldest in Padang and one of the oldest in Indonesia. It is a Cultural Property of Indonesia.
Irwan Prayitno is an Indonesian politician who was serving as the governor of West Sumatra province. He was elected in the 2010 and 2015 election for the five-year period 2010–2015 and 2016–2021. Before his election as governor, he served as a member of Indonesia's Parliament (DPR-RI) from the election region of West Sumatra for three consecutive periods.

Large-scale social restrictions or LSSR are currently in place in Indonesia in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The restrictions are implemented by local government with the approval of the Ministry of Health. It includes measures such as closing public places, schools, restricting public transport, and limiting travel from and to the restricted areas. On 7 January 2021, the Ministry of Home Affairs decreed the rename of the measure in Java and Bali into the Community Activities Restrictions Enforcement or CARE.
USS LST-678 was an LST-542-class tank landing ship built for the United States Navy during World War II. Later she was converted to Benewah-class barracks ship as USS Presque Isle (APB-44), named after Presque Isle County, Michigan. She was acquired by Indonesian Navy in 1967 as KRI Teluk Ratai (509) and decommissioned in 2019. She is planned to be preserved as museum ship.
Zainal Bakar was an Indonesian politician and bureaucrat who served as the governor of West Sumatra between 2000 and 2005. Prior to becoming governor, he served as the regent of Padang Pariaman between 1990 and 1993, and had been part of the province's bureaucracy since 1967.
