Namibia, officially the Republic of Namibia, is a country in Southern Africa. Its western border is the Atlantic Ocean. It shares land borders with Angola and Zambia to the north, Botswana to the east and South Africa to the east and south. Although it does not border Zimbabwe, less than 200 metres of the Botswanan right bank of the Zambezi River separates the two countries. Its capital and largest city is Windhoek.
The Namibian Defence Force (NDF) comprises the national military forces of Namibia. It was created when the country, then known as South West Africa, gained independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990. Chapter 15 of the Constitution of Namibia establishes the NDF and defines its role and purpose as, " ... to defend the territory and national interests of Namibia".
Namibia follows a largely independent foreign policy, with strong affiliations with states that aided the independence struggle, including Nigeria, Libya, and Cuba.
"Namibia, Land of the Brave" is the national anthem of Namibia, adopted in December 1991. It was composed by Axali Doëseb, who was the director of a traditional music group from the Kalahari desert. Doëseb was chosen to compose it after winning a contest held after Namibia became independent in 1990.
The New Zealand cricket team, the Black Caps, played a controversial tour of Zimbabwe in August and September 2005, including some warm-up matches in Namibia. They played 2 Test matches against Zimbabwe and also participated in a triangular Limited Overs International competition with Zimbabwe and India.
Hage Gottfried Geingob was a Namibian politician who served as the third president of Namibia and Commander-in-Chief of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) from 2015 until his death in February 2024. Geingob was the first Prime Minister of Namibia from 1990 to 2002, and served as prime minister again from 2012 to 2015. Between 2008 and 2012 Geingob served as Minister of Trade and Industry. In November 2014, Geingob was elected president of Namibia by an overwhelming margin. In November 2017, Geingob became the third president of the ruling SWAPO Party after winning by a large margin at the party's sixth Congress. He served as the party's president until his death. In August 2018, Geingob began a one-year term as chairperson of the Southern African Development Community.
Martin Andjaba is a Namibian diplomat and politician. He is Namibia's ambassador to Germany.
Lazarus Shiimi, known by his stage name Gazza, is a Namibian musician.
General elections were held in Namibia on 27–28 November 2009. They were the fourth general elections since independence and the fifth democratic elections. Voting ended on 28 November and official election results, released on 4 December, showed that Hifikepunye Pohamba and his SWAPO Party were re-elected, each with over 75% of the vote. Prior to the election, the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) was widely expected to score a landslide victory, with the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) considered SWAPO's biggest challenger. Fourteen political parties competed for seats in the National Assembly of Namibia, and twelve candidates ran for the presidency.
Ongwediva is a town in the Oshana Region in the north of Namibia. It is the district capital of the Ongwediva electoral constituency. As of 2023 it had 28,000 inhabitants and covered 4,102 hectares of land. Ongwediva has seven churches, two private schools and 13 government-run schools. Most of the inhabitants speak Oshiwambo.
Abraham Iyambo was a Namibian politician. Iyambo was a member of the National Assembly of Namibia since 1995, serving as Minister of Fisheries from 1997 to 2010 and Minister of Education from 2010 until his death. Iyambo was a member of both the central committee and political bureau of the SWAPO Party and the chairperson of its think tank.
The Grajaú class is a class of patrol boats of the Brazilian Navy. Grajaú was the first of twelve Grajaú-class patrol boats ordered by the Brazilian Navy in September 1990. Grajaú was launched on 21 May 1993, and was commissioned on 1 December 1993.
Erastus Amutenya Uutoni is a Namibian SWAPO politician who has served in the cabinet of Namibia since March 2010.
The Namibian Tri-Nations tournament was designed to bring more international rugby union test matches to the lower tiered teams in the Confederation of African Rugby region. Originally, the hosts Namibia were invited to Europe by the International Rugby Board to play part in the 2012 International Rugby Series. However, Namibia turned the offer down to create their own tournament so they could bring more international rugby to the Namibian fans at home.
The Namibian Tri-Nations tournament is the second edition of the Tier 3 African tournament that coincides with the 2013 end-of-year rugby union tests. With 2012 Champions Spain touring South America in the 2013 end-of-year international window, Kenya will join hosts Namibia and Zimbabwe over the 3 match days.
The National Theatre of Namibia is the state theatre in the Namibian capital Windhoek. The National Theatre promotes the development, conservation and maintenance of dramatic arts in Namibia. Previously known as the Arts Theatre (1960) and the ‘Windhoek Teater’ (1973) renovated in March 1973, the National Theatre of Namibia (NTN) was established 25 August 1989 with the objectives of presenting, producing, managing performing arts in Namibia. It was founded on August 15, 1989 under its current name and its present structure as a "non-profit purpose" but before that was already known as the South West Africa Performing Arts Council. It is located in the Windhoek Central Business District, next to the National Art Gallery of Namibia.
Tangeni Lungameni is a Namibian international cricketer who made his debut for the Namibian national team in January 2016. He is a left-arm pace bowler.
Selma Carlicia Kamanya is a Namibian model and beauty pageant titleholder who won Miss Namibia 2018 on July 7, 2018. She represented Namibia at Miss Universe 2018 pageant.
Dimbulukeni 'Dee' Nauyoma is a Namibian youth activist who along with Job Amupanda and George Kambala co-founded a radical youth movement known as the Affirmative Repositioning in November 2014. Prior to the formation of the Affirmative Repositioning, he served in the SWAPO Youth League until 2014. From 2015 to 2018, he served as Secretary General of the Namibia National Students Organisation.
The C35, also the MR 76, is a regional road in Namibia that runs from Henties Bay at the Atlantic Ocean up to the Angolan-Namibian border in Ruacana. It is 620 kilometres (390 mi) long. It has been described as one of Namibia's "most desolate roads".
