Basketball is the second most popular sport in Spain, directly behind association football. The top Spanish League, Liga ACB, is a member of ULEB, and the top Spanish League teams can compete in Europe, most notably in the Euroleague and Eurocup, and also under the FIBA Europe umbrella, in the FIBA Europe Cup. The Spanish teams also compete in a national domestic cup competition each year, called the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto, which is played by the top eight teams in the standings of the Liga ACB, at the end of the first half of the regular season.
Sport plays a prominent role in Gibraltarian life. The range of sports practiced in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar is wide and varied in comparison to its size of less than 7 square kilometres. The Government of Gibraltar promotes sport within Gibraltar and supports many local sports associations financially. Gibraltar also competes in international sporting events, having competed in the Commonwealth Games since 1958, and in the biennial Island Games, which it hosted in 1995 and 2019.
The 2008 FIBA U16 European Championship Division C was held in Gibraltar, from 26 June to 1 July 2008. Eight teams participated in the competition.
The Gibraltar men's national basketball team is the representative for the British overseas territory of Gibraltar in international basketball. The team is selected by the Gibraltar Amateur Basketball Association (GABBA) which is a member of FIBA Europe since 1985. The team competes at the European Championship for Small Countries, and in the Island Games.

It was played in Gibraltar from 2 to 7 July 2013. Cyprus women's national under-16 basketball team won the tournament.

The tournament took place in Gibraltar from 10 to 14 December 1991. Turkey women's national basketball team won the tournament for the first time.
John Gonçalves MBE is a Gibraltarian politician, who served as Mayor of Gibraltar from 4 April 2019 to 1 June 2021. Prior to this, he was chairman of the Gibraltar Police Authority, from 2013 to 2018.
