The People's Republic of China competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, United States. The FIDE Grand Prix 2019 was a series of four chess tournaments that formed part of the qualification cycle for the World Chess Championship 2021. The top two finishers who had not yet qualified, qualified for the Candidates Tournament 2020–21. The top non-qualifying finisher is eligible for the wild card. The series is organized by World Chess, formerly known as Agon. Emma Raducanu defeated Leylah Fernandez in the final, 6–4, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2021 US Open. She became the first qualifier to win a major. Raducanu won the title without losing a set during the tournament, including during her three qualification matches, and did not play a tiebreak in any set. This was her maiden WTA Tour singles title, making her the fourth woman in the Open Era to win a major as her maiden singles title.

The 1958 FIFA World Cup qualification for Asia and Africa served as the preliminary tournament for the region.
