Roger Federer defeated Novak Djokovic in the final, 6–0, 7–6 (9–7) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2012 Cincinnati Masters. It was his record fifth Cincinnati Masters title, and the first time that a player won an ATP Tour Masters 1000 event without having his serve broken or losing a set. Federer would repeat this accomplishment at the 2015 event. It was Djokovic's fourth runner-up finish at the tournament.

The event was part of the ATP World Tour 500 series of the 2015 ATP World Tour, and of the WTA International tournaments of the 2015 WTA Tour. It took place at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington, D.C., United States, from August 3 to August 9, 2015.
Three-time defending champion Kei Nishikori successfully defended his title, defeating Taylor Fritz in the final, 6–4, 6–4 to win the singles title at the 2016 Memphis Open. Notably, this was only Fritz' third career event on the ATP Tour.

Rafael Nadal defeated the defending champion Novak Djokovic in the final, 7–5, 1–6, 6–3 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2021 Italian Open. It was his record-extending 10th Italian Open title and record-equaling 36th Masters 1000 title overall. Nadal saved two match points en route to the title, in his third round match against Denis Shapovalov. This was also the fourth time that Nadal had won a tournament on 10 or more occasions, making him the only tennis player with the feat.
