The 2016 San Diego Padres season was their 48th season in MLB, and their 12th at Petco Park. The Padres finished with a record of 68 win and 94 losses, and spent most of the season trading with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the last-place spot in the National League West. The Padres set multiple records for offensive futility, becoming the first team in MLB history to fail to score a run in their opening series, being outscored 25-0 in their first three games to the Los Angeles Dodgers. They also set the record for most times shutout in their first ten games (5), as well as the largest opening day shutout loss at home in MLB history (15-0 against the Los Angeles Dodgers).

The San Francisco Giants are an American baseball team. Their 2012 season marked their 130th year in Major League Baseball, as well as their 55th year in San Francisco since their move from New York following the 1957 season, and the 13th at AT&T Park. The Giants finished with a record of 94–68, They finished in first place in the National League West, and defeated the Cincinnati Reds in five games in the NLDS thereby becoming the first National League team to come back from a 2–0 deficit in a best-of-five series by sweeping three games in the opponent's park. The Giants defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games after overcoming a 3–1 deficit in the NLCS and advancing to the World Series to face the Detroit Tigers. They swept the Tigers in four games to win their second World Series title in three years. The season also saw Giants pitcher Matt Cain throw a perfect game on June 13, 2012.
The 2012 Texas Rangers season was the 52nd season in the overall history of the franchise and the 41st since the team relocated to Arlington, Texas. The Rangers entered the season as the two-time defending champions of the American League and the American League West. They led the division for most of the season and had a 13-game lead on June 30, but faltered down the stretch. They finished 93–69, but were swept in the last series of the season by the Oakland Athletics and wound up second to the Athletics in the division. They then lost to the Baltimore Orioles in the ALWC Game and were eliminated from the playoffs.

He was an All-Star in 2018, led the National League in wins that season, and finished sixth in NL Cy Young Award voting that year. He was also an All-Star in 2022.

The regular season began at home with a loss against the Chicago Cubs on April 1 and ended with a win at Great American Ball Park against the Cincinnati Reds on September 29. In their first winning season since 1992, the Pirates finished in second place in the National League Central with 94 wins and 68 losses.
The 2013 Los Angeles Dodgers season was the 124th for the franchise in Major League Baseball, and their 56th season in Los Angeles. The Dodgers dealt with a series of injuries to key players during the first half of the season and on June 21 were 31–42, 9+1⁄2 games back in last place in the NL West. Beginning with a 6–1 win over the San Diego Padres on June 22, the return of the injured players, and the emergence of rookie Yasiel Puig, they went 46–10 through August 23 as the rest of the division collapsed. On September 19, they clinched the National League West title. This was the earliest the Dodgers had ever clinched a title and the largest deficit they had ever overcome to win the division. They opened the playoffs by defeating the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS and advanced to the NLCS. In the NLCS, they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in six games.
