The 2013 San Diego Padres season was their 45th season in MLB, and their ninth at Petco Park.
The Padres started the season on April 1 against the New York Mets. The Padres matched their record from the previous year of 76–86. [1]
On January 30, 2013, 2012 Gold Glove and Silver Slugger third baseman Chase Headley signed a one-year contract worth $8.575 million with San Diego. [2] On March 17, 2013, during spring training, he fractured the tip of his left thumb when it got caught under the second base bag while he was sliding feet-first to break up a double play. [3] He started the season on the disabled list, and returned exactly a month after the injury on April 17. [4]
The Padres finished in eleventh place at the end of spring training, eleven games behind first place Kansas City Royals, with a 16-20 record (10-9 home / 6-11 away) and .444 percentage in the Cactus League. [5]
The Padres began the season with a 5–15 record, but then went 30–19 to move a game above .500 (35–34) for the first time since ending the 2010 season at 90–72. [6]
Rookie second baseman Jedd Gyorko finished the season as the team leader in both home runs (HR) (23) and runs batted in (RBI) (63). His HR total led all MLB rookies that season, and he was the first rookie second baseman in MLB history to lead his team in RBIs. Additionally, he became just the second rookie to lead the Padres in either category since Nate Colbert in San Diego's inaugural season in 1969. [7]

The team finished in third place in the National League West with a 76–85 record, 11½ games behind the San Diego Padres.
The 1996 Los Angeles Dodgers season was the 107th for the franchise in Major League Baseball, and their 39th season in Los Angeles, California. The Dodgers were atop the standings for a substantial part of the season, albeit under two managers. Longtime manager Tommy Lasorda suffered a heart attack in late June and had to step down. The Padres began the season on April 3 at the Los Angeles Dodgers. They ended the season on October 1 at the San Francisco Giants. They finished the season 71–91 to finish in fourth place in the National League West, 33 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. They missed the playoffs for the 11th straight year.
The Tampa Bay Rays 2018 season was the Rays' 21st season of Major League Baseball, and the 11th as the "Rays". The Rays played this season with few starting pitchers. Many games were started by pitchers normally used in relief, referred to as openers. This approach saw the Rays set MLB single season records for most no decisions by starters (91) and most wins by relievers (55). They finished the season with a 90–72 record, their first winning season since 2013; however, for the fifth consecutive year, they failed to make the postseason. This was because the Red Sox had 108 wins for the division title, while the Yankees had 100 wins and the Athletics had 97 wins for the wild card.
