Politics of Slovakia takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, with a multi-party system. Legislative power is vested in the parliament and it can be exercised in some cases also by the government or directly by citizens.
The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party was a liberal-conservative, Christian-democratic political party in Slovakia. The SDKÚ-DS was a member of the Centrist Democrat International and was a member of the European People's Party until 2018, when it was expelled.
Direction – Slovak Social Democracy, formerly and legally called Direction – Social Democracy, is a national populist political party in Slovakia led by the former prime minister Robert Fico. It claims to represent social democracy with Slovak national specifics.
The Bratislava Region is one of the administrative regions of Slovakia. Its capital is Bratislava. The region was first established in 1923 and its present borders exist from 1996. It is the smallest of the eight regions of Slovakia as well as the most urbanized, most developed and most productive by GDP per capita.
Robert Fico is a Slovak politician who served as the prime minister of Slovakia from 2006 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2018. He has been the first leader of the Direction – Social Democracy (SMER-SD) party since 1999. First elected to Parliament in 1992, he was later appointed to the Council of Europe. Following his party's victory in the 2006 parliamentary election, he formed the first Fico Cabinet.
In 2010, there were an estimated 6,000 Muslims in Slovakia representing fewer than 0.1% of the country's population.
Šarišská Trstená is a village and municipality in Prešov District in the Prešov Region of eastern Slovakia.
After the October Revolution of November 7, 1917 there was a movement within the Soviet Union to unite all of the people of the world under Communist rule. This included the Eastern bloc countries as well as the Balkan States. Communism as interpreted by Vladimir Lenin and his successors in the Soviet government required the abolition of religion and to this effect the Soviet government launched a long-running campaign to eliminate religion from society. Since some of these Slavic states tied their ethnic heritage to their ethnic churches, both the peoples and their churches were targeted by the Soviets.
Slovakia does not recognise same-sex marriage or civil unions. In addition, the Constitution limits marriage to opposite-sex couples. Bills to recognise same-sex partnerships were introduced several times, in 1997, in 2000, in 2012, in 2018, in 2021 and in 2022 but were all rejected.
Igor Matovič is a Slovak politician and former businessman. He previously served as Deputy Prime Minister of Slovakia and Minister of Finance from April 2021 to December 2022 and Prime Minister from March 2020 to March 2021.
Peter Kažimír ) is a Slovak central banker and former politician, currently serving as the Governor of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS). He previously served as the country's Finance Minister under prime ministers Robert Fico and Peter Pellegrini. He was a senior member of the social-democratic SMER-SD party, but left the party after assuming the governorship of NBS.

Peter Pellegrini is a Slovak politician who served as the prime minister of Slovakia from 2018 to 2020 and Minister of Health from December 2019 to March 2020. He previously served as deputy prime minister (2016–2018) and minister for Education and Science (2014), as well as spending two years as speaker of the National Council (2014–2016). Pellegrini had been a member of Direction – Social Democracy until he left the party and founded Voice – Social Democracy in late June 2020.
Parliamentary elections were held in Slovakia on 5 March 2016 to elect the 150 members of the National Council. The ruling left-wing populist Direction – Social Democracy (SMER–SD) party remained the strongest party, but lost its majority. The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party (SDKÚ-DS), which led the government between 2000–06 and 2010–12, was defeated heavily, failing to cross the electoral threshold and losing its representation in the National Council. The centre-right Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) also failed to cross the threshold for the first time since 1990, whilst the far-right nationalist Kotleba – People's Party Our Slovakia (ĽSNS) entered parliament for the first time.
Anton Srholec was a Slovak Roman Catholic priest and Salesian. He was also a writer, charity worker and head of the Resota center for homeless people in Bratislava.

Voice – Social Democracy is a social-democratic political party in Slovakia. The party was founded in 2020 by former senior members of the left-wing populist Direction – Social Democracy (SMER–SD). It is led by Peter Pellegrini who served as Prime Minister of Slovakia from 2018 to 2020 and deputy chairman of SMER–SD from 2014 to 2020 In October 2022, it was admitted as an associate member of the Party of European Socialists (PES).
A constitutional referendum was held in Slovakia on 21 January 2023.
