The Prime Minister is the head of government in Sweden. Sweden at the 2016 Summer Olympics

Sweden competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 3 to 20 August 2016. Swedish athletes have competed at every Summer Olympic Games in the modern era, except for the sparsely attended 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis. They extended their medal-winning streak to 47 straight Olympic Games by obtaining a silver in women's road race.

Gunnel Vallquist was a Swedish writer and translator. Born in Stockholm, Vallquist was elected a member of the Swedish Academy in 1982. Vallquist was a member of the Catholic Church and wrote several essays on Catholic religion in contemporary times, among them reports from the Second Vatican Council. She translated the seven-piece novel In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust into Swedish (1965–1982).

2015 IKEA stabbing attack

The 2015 IKEA stabbing attack occurred on 10 August when Abraham Ukbagabir fatally stabbed two people in an IKEA store in the Erikslund Shopping Center in Västerås, Sweden as revenge for not being granted asylum in Sweden. The stabbing attracted worldwide attention. Ukbagabir was convicted of two first degree murder charges and sentenced to life in December 2015.

The fatal stabbing of Alexandra Mezher occurred on 25 January 2016. Mezher, a 22-year-old worker at the center, of Lebanese Christian origin, was allegedly stabbed by a male asylum seeker at a refuge for unaccompanied minors in Mölndal, Sweden. The attacker, a Somalian male, was posing as an underage unaccompanied refugee claiming to be 15, but, after the attack, medical examination determined that he was at least 18 years old.
