The Big 12 Conference is a college athletic conference headquartered in Irving, Texas. It consists of 14 full-member universities in the states of Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia.
The Big 12 Championship Game is a college football game held by the Big 12 Conference between the best and the second-best Big 12 team. The game was played each year since the conference's formation in 1996 until 2010 and returned during the 2017 season. From 1996 to 2010, the championship game pitted the Big 12 North Division champion against the South Division champion in a game held after the regular season was completed. From 2017 onward, the game features the two teams with the best conference records.
The TCU Horned Frogs are the athletic teams that represent Texas Christian University. The 18 varsity teams participate in NCAA Division I and in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) for football, competing mostly in the Big 12 Conference. The school was a founding member of the Southwest Conference and was a member of the Western Athletic Conference, Conference USA (C-USA), and the Mountain West Conference before joining the Big 12. Two TCU teams participate outside the Big 12 in sports not sponsored by that conference. The rifle team competes in the Patriot Rifle Conference, and the beach volleyball team moved to C-USA for 2023–24 after having been in the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association.

The Cowboys Kickoff Classic was an annual college football game played on the opening weekend of the college football season. It was played in Arlington, Texas, at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys from 2009 to 2021. The game was originally known as the Cowboys Classic from 2009 to 2014, Advocare Classic from 2015 to 2019, and Allstate Kickoff Classic in 2021. No game was scheduled for 2022 or 2023.

Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, and competed in the Big 12 Conference. They were led by first-year head coach Sonny Dykes. TCU compiled a perfect 12–0 regular season record; its first undefeated regular season since 2010. After an overtime loss in the 2022 Big 12 Championship Game against Kansas State by a score of 31–28, TCU was selected as the third seed in the four-team College Football Playoff. In the semifinal round, TCU beat #2 Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl. They defeated Michigan by a score of 51–45, becoming the first Big 12 team to win a College Football Playoff game as well as make the CFP National Championship game. TCU lost the National Championship game to the Georgia Bulldogs by a score of 65–7 and finished the season ranked #2 in both the AP and Coaches Polls.
