The services team had previously played in the Senior Division Football League in 1998 – then the second tier of football. In recent times, Police FC became champions of the Second Division Football League in 2014 to get promotions to the First Division before making their debut in the Bangladesh Championship League in 2015. Police FC gained the promotion to Bangladesh Premier League for the very first time in the club's history by becoming champion of the 2018-19 Bangladesh Championship League.

On 3 August 2022, the club owners announced that the club will temporarily withdraw from professional football due to insufficient commercial returns from it, days after the end of 2021–22 Bangladesh Premier League. They also finished third in the league, which is the best top tier league result of the club's history. The club played their homes games at Munshiganj Stadium in their final season.

Dhaka Abahani were the defending champions. Bashundhara Kings and NoFeL Sporting Club were entered as the promoted teams from the 2017 Bangladesh Championship League. The league was delayed and was rescheduled to start from 18 January 2019. Six venues hosted the matches.

The 2019-20 Bangladesh Championship League was 8th edition of the league since its founded 2012 by the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF). A total 13 teams would've participated in the league. The league would've commenced from 28 March 2020. On 16 March 2020, Bangladesh Football Federation suspended all competition, including this league, due to the coronavirus pandemic. On 20 May 2020, the Federation and Professional Football League Committee officially cancelled this season of the league.

The league was commenced on 15 November 2022 and ended on 31 December 2022.

Amirul Islam is a former Bangladeshi professional footballer who played as a striker for Police Football Club while serving the Bangladesh Police from 2007 to 2022.
