The 2018 MSBL season was the 30th season of the Men's State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 16 March, with round 1 seeing the reigning Champions the Perth Redbacks hosting the Lakeside Lightning. The 2018 MSBL All-Star Game was played on 4 June at Bendat Basketball Centre – the home of basketball in Western Australia. The regular season ended on Saturday 28 July. The finals began on Friday 3 August and ended on Saturday 1 September, when the Perry Lakes Hawks defeated the Joondalup Wolves in the MSBL Grand Final.

Regular season

The regular season began on Friday 16 March and ended on Saturday 28 July after 20 rounds of competition. Again in 2018, all games over the Easter Weekend were played on a blockbuster Thursday night with six venues all hosting games before the league took a break for the Easter long weekend. Anzac Round took place in round 6 of the competition with the Kalamunda Eastern Suns and Willetton Tigers continuing their Anzac Day game tradition. There was also Women's Round in round 9, Rivalry Round in round 12, and Heritage Round in round 16. [1]

Ben Purser is an Australian basketball player for the Perry Lakes Hawks of the NBL1 West. He debuted for the Hawks in the State Basketball League (SBL) in 2008 and has played ever year for them since. He has helped the Hawks reach four SBL/NBL1 grand finals while winning two championships. After runner-up finishes in 2009 and 2011, Purser led the Hawks to victory in 2018 behind a grand final MVP performance. In 2020, he helped the Hawks reach the grand final of the West Coast Classic. In 2021, he helped the Hawks win the inaugural NBL1 West championship to claim his second title. He is also a four-time SBL All-Defensive Five honouree, a one-time All-Star Five recipient, and in 2009 he won the Most Improved Player award.

Jarrad Prue is an Australian former basketball player and current coach. He played 15 seasons with the Lakeside Lightning of the NBL1 West and is considered one of the NBL1 West's all-time best, having earned the title as the league's greatest ever rebounder. In 2013, he had a three-game stint with the Perth Wildcats of the National Basketball League (NBL). In 2020, he was appointed president of the Lakeside Lightning.

Jalen Billups is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Toyoda Gosei Scorpions of the Japanese B.League. He played five years of college basketball for Northern Kentucky before starting his professional career in Australia with the Cockburn Cougars of the State Basketball League (SBL) in 2017. After a short stint in Scotland with the Glasgow Rocks, he returned to the SBL in 2018 and won the league's MVP as well as guiding the Joondalup Wolves to the SBL Grand Final. He joined the Southern Huskies in 2019 for their inaugural season in the New Zealand NBL and then moved to Japan in 2021 to play for the Toyoda Gosei Scorpions.
