Elections were held in the Niagara Region of Ontario on October 22, 2018 in conjunction with municipal elections across the province.

Regional Chair

For the first time, the chair of regional council was to be directly elected. [1] However, on the last day of candidate registration the Ontario Government announced they would be cancelling this council race. [2]

At the time of this cancellation, five candidates were registered to run for he chair position. Incumbent chair Al Caslin and Pelham Mayor Dave Augstyn both decided to run for a regional council seat in their respective municipalities.

The 2018 St. Catharines municipal election took place on Monday October 22, 2018 to determine a mayor, regional and city councillors and school trustees in the city of St. Catharines, Ontario. The election of a regional chair was also scheduled, but was cancelled by the provincial government led by Premier Doug Ford on Friday July 27, 2018, the registration deadline for candidates. [10]

St. Catharines is the largest city in Canada's Niagara Region and the sixth largest urban area in the province of Ontario. As of 2016, it has an area of 96.13 square kilometres (37.12 sq mi), 133,113 residents, and a metropolitan population of 406,074. The Regional Municipality of Niagara, also colloquially known as the Niagara Region or Region of Niagara, is a regional municipality comprising twelve municipalities of Southern Ontario, Canada. The regional seat is in Thorold. It is the southern end of the Golden Horseshoe, the largest megalopolis in Canada.

King's Highway 58, commonly referred to as Highway 58, is a provincially maintained highway in the Canadian province of Ontario. The route is divided into two segments with a combined length of 15.5 km (9.6 mi). The southern segment travels from Niagara Regional Road 3, formerly Highway 3, in Port Colborne, to the Highway 58A junction in the southern end of Welland, a distance of 7.2 km (4.5 mi). The northern segment begins at Highway 20 near Allanburg and travels north and west to a large junction with Highway 406 at the St. Catharines – Thorold boundary, a distance of 8.3 km (5.2 mi). An 18.1 km (11.2 mi) gap separates the two segments within Welland and Pelham. The entire route is located within the Regional Municipality of Niagara.

Jim Bradley (politician) Canadian politician

James J. Bradley is a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a long-serving Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, sitting as an MPP from 1977 until 2018. He represented the riding of St. Catharines and served in the provincial cabinets of David Peterson, Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne. He was elected as a regional councillor in the St. Catharines municipal election of 2018. He is currently the Chair of the Regional Municipality of Niagara.

Bart Maves is a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1995 to 2003. In 2010, he was elected as a Regional Councillor representing Niagara Falls for the Niagara Regional Council.

The St. Catharines City Council is the governing body of the City of St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

2006 St. Catharines municipal election

The 2006 St. Catharines municipal election took place on 13 November 2006 to determine a mayor, regional and city councillors and school trustees in the city of St. Catharines, Ontario. The incumbent mayor, Tim Rigby, vacated the mayoral position and ran for election to Niagara Regional Council.

Brian James McMullan was the mayor of St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada from 2006 to 2014. He was elected to the position in the 2006 St. Catharines municipal election. He was previously a St. Catharines city councillor and a Niagara regional councillor.

Allan Ernest Pietz was a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was a businessman and dairy operator by career. He held a series of elected municipal offices in the former Crowland Township before he was elected mayor of Welland in 1965. He held office until 1978, when he did not run for re-election for mayor. He was succeeded by Eugene Stranges. In 1981, he was elected as a Niagara Regional Councillor from Welland. While holding office, he was the morning radio farm reporter for the local radio station CHOW-AM.

Niagara Centre is a provincial electoral district in Ontario, Canada, represented from 1867 until 1977 and again since 2007 in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Its population in 2006 was 112,875.
