A member of the Broad Front, she served as Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mining from 2015 to 2019 during the second administration of President Tabaré Vázquez. In the 2019 Uruguayan general election, she was elected to the Senate of Uruguay, taking her seat on February 15, 2020. On September 27, 2020, she was elected Intendant of Montevideo, the capital of the country. She is a candidate in the 2024 Broad Front presidential primaries for president of Uruguay in the 2024 general election.
General elections were held in Uruguay on Sunday, 27 October 2019 to elect the President and General Assembly. As no presidential candidate received a majority in the first round of voting, a runoff election took place on 24 November.

A member of the Justicialist Party, Leiva was elected in 2019, and currently sits in the Frente de Todos parliamentary bloc. He previously served as intendente (mayor) of General José de San Martín, Chaco on two occasions, from 2009 to 2019, and from 2003 to 2008.
General elections will be held in El Salvador on 4 February 2024 to elect the president, vice president and all 60 deputies of the Legislative Assembly. This will be followed by a second set of elections on 3 March 2024 in which voters will elect all 44 mayors and municipal councils of the country's municipalities and all 20 of El Salvador's deputies to the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN). If necessary, a second presidential round will be held on the same date if no candidate receives over 50 percent of the vote in the first round.

A member of the National Party, he previously served in the same position from 2000 to 2009 and from 2015 to 2020, as well as National Representative in the 47th Legislature (2010-2015).
