It was organised as a lead-up tournament to the 2021 Australian Open, and was held at the same venue, due to other tournaments in Australia being cancelled as a result from the COVID-19 pandemic. This tournament took place simultaneously with the 2021 Gippsland Trophy and the 2021 Grampians Trophy. Players who had originally intended to participate in this tournament or the Gippsland Trophy, but were forced to undergo strict quarantine measures upon arrival in Australia, were able to participate in the 2021 Grampians Trophy. The entry list of 2021 Australian Open was used to determine the entry list of this tournament; with half the players playing the Yarra Valley Classic, and the other half playing the 2021 Gippsland Trophy.

The 2021 Charleston Open was a women's professional tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina. It was the 48th edition of the event on the WTA Tour and was classified as a WTA 500 tournament on the 2021 WTA Tour. For 2021, it and the 2021 MUSC Health Women's Open held consecutively at the same facility were the only events of the annual tour's clay court season to be played on green clay. The 2021 edition of the event was the last to be sponsored by Chinese automaker Geely, the owner of Volvo Cars.
Ashleigh Barty was the defending champion from when the tournament was last held in 2019, and she successfully defended her title after Bianca Andreescu retired from the final with the scoreline at 6–3, 4–0. Barty saved a match point in the second round against Kristína Kučová en route to the title. The victory earned Barty her first successful title defense in her singles career and made her the sixth woman to accomplish a title defense at the Miami Open.
Aryna Sabalenka defeated Ashleigh Barty in the final, 6–0, 3–6, 6–4, to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2021 Madrid Open. It was Sabalenka's 10th career WTA Tour singles title and her first title on clay.
Iga Świątek defeated Karolína Plíšková in the final, 6–0, 6–0, to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2021 Italian Open. It was Świątek's first WTA 1000 singles title, and the 13 points Świątek lost in the championship match is the fewest on record in a WTA 1000 final; Serena Williams previously held the record, from the 2015 Miami Open final. This was the first WTA singles final to be resolved with a 'double bagel' scoreline since Simona Halep defeated Anastasija Sevastova at the 2016 Bucharest Open, and was just the tenth such final in WTA history. With the win, Świątek broke into the top 10 of the WTA rankings for the first time.
Ashleigh Barty defeated Karolína Plíšková in the final, 6–3, 6–7(4–7), 6–3 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. She became the first Australian women’s champion at Wimbledon since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1980, the first top seed to win the title since Serena Williams in 2016 and the first at any major since Simona Halep at the 2018 French Open. Barty's victory made her the fourth player, following Ann Jones, Martina Hingis and Amélie Mauresmo, to win the women's singles title after previously winning the girls' singles title. She retained the WTA No. 1 singles ranking by reaching the semifinals, with Aryna Sabalenka having also been in contention for the top ranking.
Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Iga Świątek in the final, 6–4, 6–2, to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2021 French Open. It was the pair's second French Open title and third major together. Krejčíková became the first woman to win both the singles and doubles tournaments at a Grand Slam since Serena Williams at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships, and the first to do so at the French Open since Mary Pierce in 2000, making her the seventh woman to accomplish the sweep in French Open history.
Ashleigh Barty defeated Jil Teichmann in the final, 6–3, 6–1, to win the women's singles title at the 2021 Cincinnati Masters and her first title at the tournament. Barty won the title without dropping a set. It was her fifth and last title of the season, her third WTA 1000 title, and her 13th career singles title overall on the WTA Tour.
Paula Badosa defeated Victoria Azarenka in the final, 7–6(7–5), 2–6, 7–6(7–2), to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2021 Indian Wells Masters. At three hours and four minutes, the final was the longest women's final contested at Indian Wells. By winning the title, Badosa became the first Spanish woman to win the tournament. This was her first WTA 1000 title and her second career WTA singles title overall. Azarenka was aiming to become the first woman to win the title at Indian Wells three times.

Iga Świątek defeated Maria Sakkari in the final, 6–4, 6–1 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters. She became the first Pole to win the title.
Iga Świątek defeated Naomi Osaka in the final, 6–4, 6–0 to win the women's singles title at the 2022 Miami Open. She became the fourth woman in history, after Steffi Graf, Kim Clijsters, and Victoria Azarenka, to complete the Sunshine Double in singles, having won Indian Wells two weeks earlier. It was Świątek's first Miami Open title, her third consecutive WTA 1000 title, and her fourth WTA 1000-level title overall. Świątek became the first woman in history to win the first three WTA 1000 titles of the year in succession, the first player since Serena Williams in 2013 to win three consecutive WTA 1000 titles, and extended her win streak to 17 matches. She lost no sets and just 26 games en route to the title, the fewest since Martina Hingis dropped 21 games in 2000.
Iga Świątek defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final, 6–2, 6–2 to win the singles tennis title at the 2022 Women's Stuttgart Open. By winning her fourth consecutive title, Świątek extended her winning streak to 23 matches.
Iga Świątek successfully defended her title, defeating Ons Jabeur in the final, 6–2, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2022 Italian Open. She did not drop a set during the tournament. This was Świątek's fifth consecutive WTA Tour title, and she became the first player to win four WTA 1000 titles in a single season since Serena Williams in 2013. With the win, Świątek extended her winning streak to 28 matches – the longest on the WTA Tour since Serena Williams won 34 consecutive matches in 2013. This was also the first time in her professional career that Świątek defended a title. Jabeur reached the final after saving a match point in the semifinals against Daria Kasatkina.
