The 2021 Kolkata Municipal Corporation election was held on 19 December 2021 to elect 144 members of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) which governs Kolkata, the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. [7] A total of 40,48,357 electors were eligible to vote in the election. [8] [9] The results were announced on 21 December. [10]

Contents

The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won the election by an overwhelming majority and captured 134 out of 144 wards. Firhad Hakim was elected as the mayor of Kolkata. [6] In this election, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 3 seats, Left Front won 2 seats (CPI and CPI(M) won 1 seat each), Indian National Congress (INC) won 2 seats and independent candidates won 3 seats.

Voter statistics

In this election, there were a total of 4,048,357 eligible electors. On 19 December 2,611,312 voters (64.50% of the total voters) exercised their franchise, of which 1,425,568 were male, 1,185,723 female and 21 registered voters were of the third gender. [5]

It was led by Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Indian National Congress and Indian Secular Front with other smaller parties of Left Front during the 2021 elections. After the election, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the head of Congress, declared the end of any alliance with Indian Secular Front Later on CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said the electoral alliances was over after the polls, but the political understanding between Left, Congress and ISF will continue.

Communism in India has existed as a social or political ideology as well as a political movement since at least as early as the 1920s. In its early years, communist ideology was harshly suppressed through legal prohibitions and criminal prosecutions. Eventually, communist parties became ensconced in national party politics, sprouting several political offshoots.

Sovan Chatterjee is an Indian politician. He is a former member of Indian National Congress, All India Trinamool Congress, and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Voting for the two remaining constituencies was delayed and was scheduled to be held on 16 May 2021. Polling in Nandigram took place on 1 April.

Violence occurred in the aftermath of the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, which the ruling Trinamool Congress won for a third consecutive term.

Municipal elections was held in West Bengal on 27 February 2022 to elect members of all 108 municipalities in the state. The election to four remaining wards were held in 26 June.
