On the evening of 23 December 2022, a private house operating as an unauthorized nursing home caught fire in Kemerovo, Russia, killing 22 people and injuring six. [1] [2]
In 2021, the Ministry of Emergency Situations proposed introducing a special registry for nursing homes and hospices after a series of fires in Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Krasnogorsk, Moscow Oblast, the village of Ishbuldino in Bashkortostan, and the village of Borovsky, Tyumen Oblast. [3]
In January, the boarding house "Golden Age" burned down in Kemerovo, killing four people. [3]
The fire occurred on the evening of 23 December on Tavricheskaya Street in Kemerovo, covering an area of 180 square metres (1,900 sq ft) The fire was rated as 'increased difficulty.' [4]
TASS, citing emergency services, wrote that the cause of the fire could be a malfunctioning furnace. "A private residential building was adapted for the elderly. There was stove heating. According to preliminary data, it was the improper operation of the stove that caused the fire," the source said. According to an Interfax source however, the cause of the fire could be a malfunction of an electric heater or wiring. [4]
RIA Novosti writes that the fire was extinguished by 23:15 local time. [5]
Initially, four people were reported killed and two injured. The Ministry of Emergency Situations later announced that six people had died. TASS, citing emergency services, increased the count first to nine victims, and then later 11. [3]
As of 23 December, 20 people are confirmed dead. [6]
Kemerovo Oblast Governor Sergey Tsivilyov announced all nursing homes in the city, particularly unregistered ones, to be checked by the emergency services. [7] The Investigative Committee of Russia has opened a criminal case after the fire in Kemerovo. [8] An evangelical priest, suspected with running the care home was detained. [7]

On 25 March 2018 at 16:00 local time, a fire engulfed the Winter Cherry shopping mall and entertainment complex in Kemerovo, Russia. It killed at least 60 people according to official statements. The blaze started somewhere on the top floor of the four-story complex, and people were seen jumping from windows to escape it. 100 people were evacuated, and another 20 were rescued. Others claim the number of people killed in the fire is being covered up, and that the real figure runs into the hundreds. According to the Russian authorities, the source of these rumors was a Ukrainian prankster who called the morgue posing as an emergency services officer. In 2018, he uploaded recordings of these calls to his YouTube channel and confirmed the calls during subsequent interviews.

The attack to the care house in Stara Krasnianka took place on 11 March 2022 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On 7 March the Ukrainian armed forces occupied a care house in the village of Stara Krasnianka, near Kreminna, Luhansk region, establishing a firing position and reportedly leaving the patients unevacuated due to the presence of mines.
