The 2023 New York City Marathon is the 52nd edition of the annual marathon race in New York City that took place on Sunday, November 5, 2023. [1] [2] [3] A Platinum Label marathon, it was the last of six World Marathon Majors events in 2023. [4] [5] [6] . The open division was won by Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia.
Evans Chebet of Kenya, who won the previous year's race, his first New York City Marathon, with a time of 2:08:41, was expected to return to defend his title. [7] [8] His compatriot Geoffrey Kamworor, who won the New York City Marathon in 2017 and in 2019, had aimed to be the first runner to win the men's open division of the marathon thrice. [7] [lower-alpha 1] Kenyan runner Edward Cheserek, the most decorated athlete in the history of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), was planning to debut at the marathon distance in this race. Kenyan runner Sharon Lokedi, who won the previous year's race, her first marathon, with a time of 2:23:23, raced again and got third. [10] [11] Her compatriot Brigid Kosgei, who previously held the marathon world record after she won the 2019 Chicago Marathon with a time of 2:14:04, ran this race as her first New York City Marathon. The 2023 edition of the New York City Marathon was the world's largest marathon in 2023 as of November 6, 2023, with 51,402 total finishers. It was the third largest edition of the New York City Marathon. [13]
Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia won the men's race, setting a course record with a time of 2:04:58. He was trailed by Albert Korir of Kenya, Shura Kitata of Ethiopia, Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands, and Koen Naert of Belgium. [14]

The New York City Marathon, currently branded as the TCS New York City Marathon for sponsorship reasons, is an annual marathon that courses through the five boroughs of New York City. It is the largest marathon in the world, with 53,627 finishers in 2019 and 98,247 applicants for the 2017 race. Along with the Boston Marathon and Chicago Marathon, it is among the pre-eminent long-distance annual running events in the United States and is one of the World Marathon Majors.
The Amsterdam Marathon is an annual marathon (42.195 km) in Amsterdam in the Netherlands since 1975. The road race has a Platinum Label from World Athletics. During the event, there are also a half marathon race (21.097 km) and an 8 km race in the program.
Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner. He won the silver medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics. Kamworor claimed victories at the World Half Marathon Championships three times in a row from 2014 to 2018. He took individual titles at the World Cross Country Championships in 2015 and 2017, and finished third in 2019. He won his first World Marathon Major at the 2017 New York City Marathon and regained his title in 2019, after a second-place finish in 2015. Kamworor also placed second at the 2023 London Marathon and earned three other podium finishes at a World Marathon Majors.
The men's 10,000 metres event at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place on 13 August at the Olympic Stadium. Tamirat Tola Abera is an Ethiopian Olympic and world champion long-distance runner who competes in track, road and cross country events. He won gold medal in the marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, setting an Olympic record and the bronze medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Tamirat competed in the marathon at the 2017 and 2022 World Athletics Championships, earning silver and gold, respectively, setting a championship record at the latter in the process. He finished third at both the 2021 Tokyo and 2023 London Marathon and won the 2023 New York City Marathon, breaking the course record.
Mule Wasihun Lakew is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who competes in road running events up to the marathon distance. He was a team silver medallist at the 2016 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. Mule placed third at the 2019 London Marathon. He holds a marathon best of 2:03:16 hours.
