The 2024 Chilean municipal elections were held on 26 and 27 October 2024. The elections were held on the same day as regional elections. [1] The combined municipal and regional elections had a participation rate of 85% which makes it the election with the highest voter turnout in the history of Chile. [2] Among the defeated candidates were a series of high profile politicians like Karla Rubilar, Marcela Cubillos, Iván Poduje and the incumbent mayor of Santiago Irací Hassler who lost to Mario Desbordes. [3]

La marcha más grande de Chile was a demonstration that took place in Santiago de Chile on October 25, 2019, as part of the 2019–2021 Chilean protests. It was considered a "peaceful concentration" by local authorities and by the national and international press. In Santiago alone, more than 1.2 million people participated, the biggest protest concentration in Chile's modern history, surpassing the record settled in 1988, by the closing rally of the "No" option in the 1988 national plebiscite. In total, it is believed that more than 3 million people across the country participated in the protest.

Irací Luiza Hassler Jacob is a Chilean politician and economist who served as the mayor of the commune of Santiago, which corresponds with Downtown Santiago, from 2021 to 2024. Hassler is a member of the Communist Party of Chile (PCCh), a far left-wing political party. She has been described as "the new face of feminism and environmentalism" in Chile.
