Vitacura is a commune of Chile located in Santiago Province, Santiago Metropolitan Region. It is one of the most expensive and fashionable areas of Santiago. Inhabitants are primarily high income families. It belongs to the Northeastern zone of Santiago de Chile.

There is an abundance of elite private schools in Vitacura and Las Condes, including Saint George's College, Colegio Santa Úrsula, Alliance Francaise, Colegio La Maisonette, Colegio Tabancura, Colegio Los Andes, Colegio Sagrados Corazones de Manquehue and Colegio San Benito.

The Costanera Norte toll-way connects Vitacura with the international airport and subway stations are located in the neighboring municipality of Las Condes.

Vitacura is the site of ECLAC headquarters, home to the European Southern Observatory (ESO) headquarters in Chile, and home to Santiago's most exclusive shopping street, Avenida Alonso de Córdova.

The Gliders Club of Vitacura can be located in this commune. With a privileged location, the area is considered to have ideal climate conditions for such types of flights.

Demographics

According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, Vitacura spans an area of 28.3 km2 (11 sq mi) and has 81,499 inhabitants (35,118 men and 46,381 women), and the commune is an entirely urban area. The population grew by 2.7% (2,124 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses. [3]

Administration

As a commune, Vitacura is a third-level administrative division of Chile administered by a municipal council, headed by a mayor (alcalde, in Spanish) who is directly elected every four years. The 2021 mayor is Camila Merino (Evópoli). [1] [2] The communal council has the following members:

Vitacura belongs to Electoral District No. 11 together with the communes of Lo Barnechea, Las Condes, La Reina and Peñalolén and to the VII Senatorial District (Santiago Metropolitan Region).

Shopping

This commune is one of the most expensive and fashionable areas of Santiago and boutiques of many of the world's leading luxury retailers are located in Vitacura. These stores include Louis Vuitton, Armani, Tommy Hilfiger, Swarovski, Salvatore Ferragamo, Ermenegildo Zegna, Brooks Brothers, Hermès, MaxMara, Bang & Olufsen, and Hugo Boss, as well as many others.

Education

The main campus of the Lycée Antoine-de-Saint-Exupéry de Santiago , a French international school, is in Vitacura. [10]

The Deutsche Schule Santiago (or Colegio Alemán de Santiago) maintains the Vitacura campus, which houses students in years one through six. [11]

Chartwell International School , Preschool and Primary school is located in the Lo Curro region of Vitacura.

Deutsche Schule Santiago is a German international school in Santiago. Years 7 through 12 and the school administration are at the Las Condes campus. Years one through six are at the Vitacura Campus. Preschool classes are held at the Cerro Colorado campus in Las Condes.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Santiago Metro Line 7</span> Under-planning Santiago Metro line

Line 7 is a new rapid transit line due to open on the Santiago Metro, in 2027. Intended to relieve the busy Line 1, the Line 7 will start in Renca in the northwest, passing through the city center, before ending in the borders of Las Condes and Vitacura in the northeast. Expected to be finished by 2028, it will add 19 new stations and 24.8 km (15.4 mi) of track to the system. Its distinctive color on the network line map is gray. The northeastern zone of Santiago de Chile, known as “sector oriente”, refers to the name given to the communes to the east of the Santiago commune, where the majority of the population with the highest income in Chile live. It is made up of the communes of Lo Barnechea, Vitacura, Las Condes, Providencia, La Reina, and Ñuñoa. It had 929,158 inhabitants according to the Chilean census of 2017 added to a large floating population that travels daily to the sector for work, studies or services, especially to Providencia and Las Condes through Providencia Avenue and Apoquindo Avenue, which are the main commercial and transport axis of the city and the continuation of the Alameda from downtown. Together covering the 40% of total motorized journeys in the city. Likewise, in the communal limit of Las Condes, Providencia and Vitacura is located the financial sector of Sanhattan, which has experienced significant growth in high-rise buildings destined mainly for offices and trade.
