The 54th annual Fiesta Bowl will be one of the college football playoff quarterfinal games and will feature two of the playoff teams. Background

The 2024 Fiesta bowl is a quarterfinal game for the College Football Playoff (CFP). [4] Boise State being the number 9 team in the final CFP rankings and winning the their conference championship game, received an automatic bye in the new 12 team format of the CFP and was selected to play in the bowl game as the 3rd seed. No. 11 SMU and No. 6 Penn State will compete for the other spot in the Fiesta Bowl on December 21, 2024. [4] [5] The winner of the Fiesta Bowl will advance in playoff to the Orange Bowl, to face the winner of the Sugar Bowl. [6]

If SMU wins their first round game, the game would mark the third all-time meeting between the Mustangs and the Broncos, with the two programs having previously met in a 2003–04 home and home series, with Boise State winning both games. [7]

By contrast, if Penn State wins, the bowl would be the first ever meeting between the Nittany Lions and the Broncos. [8]
