30XX is a rogue-lite platform game from independent developer Batterystaple Games and the sequel to 20XX . It was released on Microsoft Windows via Steam early access on February 17, 2021, and in full on August 9, 2023. [1] A Nintendo Switch release was planned on the same day, but was delayed to September 1. Like its predecessor, 30XX was inspired by the Mega Man series, but uses procedurally generated levels. However, unlike 20XX, the game possesses both a permadeath roguelike mode and a "Mega Mode" where the levels of the entire game are generated in advance and do not change upon death, giving players an experience more similar to the Mega Man games. [2] The game follows the android main characters of 20XX, Nina and Ace, who awaken after a millennium to discover the world has changed irreversibly after the advent of the Synthetic Mind. [3] The early access release of the game was positively received by critics, who called it an improvement over its predecessor.
Following complaints about the art style of 20XX, the art style was revamped for the sequel to be more similar to games such as Mega Man ZX . The sprites were created by the artist of Rogue Legacy , Glauber Kotaki. [4]
TJ Denzer of Shacknews called the game "sure to please any platforming fan whether you dig roguelikes or not". [5] Mike Minotti of VentureBeat said that the game had a "nice visual boost" from its predecessor. [6]

Roguelike is a subgenre of role-playing video games traditionally characterized by a dungeon crawl through procedurally generated levels, turn-based gameplay, grid-based movement, and permanent death of the player character. Commercial ports of the game for a range of personal computers were made by Toy, Wichman, and Jon Lane under the company A.I. Design and financially supported by the Epyx software publishers. Additional ports to modern systems have been made since by other parties using the game's now-open source code.

As such, ToeJam & Earl is often considered to be an example of a roguelike game.
Permadeath or permanent death is a game mechanic in both tabletop games and video games in which player characters who lose all of their health are considered dead and cannot be used anymore. Depending on the situation, this could require the player to create a new character to continue, or completely restart the game potentially losing nearly all progress made. Other terms include persona death and player death. Some video games offer a hardcore mode that features this mechanic, rather than making it part of the core game.
