Abdullah Al Mamun (born 31 December 1966) is a Bangladeshi physicist who is a professor of physics at Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. [1] [2]
A A Mamun (son of Darbesh Ali and Rizia Ali) was born in Dhamrai Upazila, Dhaka, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) on 31 December 1966, and he passed the Secondary School Certificate and Higher Secondary Certificate examinations, respectively, from Kushura Abbas Ali High School (Dhamrai Upazila, Dhaka) and Government Science College (Tejgaon Thana, Dhaka) in 1981 and 1983, respectively. Mamun attended Jahangirnagar University, and passed Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in physics in 1986 (held in 1989) and 1987 (held in 1991), respectively. [3] On the basis of his extraordinary academic results, and performances in other activities at the university, Mamun was given an opportunity to represent Jahangirnagar University and at the same time Bangladesh in “International Youth Village Program-1989” held in Fukuoka, Japan, where he met with Naruhito, the crown prince (of that time) of Japan. [3]
Mamun gained a PhD in plasma physics at the University of St Andrews by a Commonwealth Scholarship under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan. [3] He then performed postdoctoral studies in Germany and Scotland by an Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral research fellowship, and by a Commonwealth postdoctoral research fellowship, respectively. [4] [3] As well as his faculty position at Jahangirnagar University, Mamun has a visiting position at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. [5]
Mamun has published over 400 research articles in peer-reviewed international journals. [6] The Institute of Physics (London) published his textbook on dusty plasma physics. [1]
On the basis of a report published in PLOS Biology, Mamun is one of top 2% [position:130 out of 43,218 (2%)] scientists (in the world) working in the fields of fluids and plasma, as well as top 2% [position: 28,781 out of 159,624 (2%)] scientists (in the world) working in all branches of sciences (including engineering and medical sciences). Fayyazuddin, also spelled as Fayyaz Uddin, is a Pakistani theoretical physicist, emeritus professor, specialising in theoretical physics and mathematical physics at Quaid-e-Azam University campus National Centre for Physics, Islamabad. He is a senior scientist at the National Center for Physics. Fayyaz is doing research in the fields of quantum mechanics, particle physics, and meson physics. Padma Kant Shukla was a distinguished Professor and first International Chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department of Ruhr-University Bochum in Germany. He was also the director of the International Centre for Advanced Studies in Physical Sciences at Ruhr-University Bochum. He held a PhD in physics from Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India and a second doctorate in Theoretical Plasma Physics from Umeå University in Sweden.

Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay is an Indian computer scientist specializing in computational biology. A professor at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, she is a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize winner in Engineering Science for 2010, IInfosys Prize 2017 laureate in the Engineering and Computer Science category and TWAS Prize winner for Engineering Sciences in 2018. Her research is mainly in the areas of evolutionary computation, pattern recognition, machine learning and bioinformatics. Since 1 August 2015, she has been the Director of the Indian Statistical Institute, and she would oversee the functioning of all five centres of Indian Statistical Institute located at Kolkata, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, and Tezpur besides several other Statistical Quality Control & Operation Research Units spread across India. She is the first woman Director of the Indian Statistical Institute. Currently she is on the Prime Ministers' Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council. In 2022 she was given the Padma Shri award for Science and Engineering by the Government of India.

Prior to that, he was head of ICTP's High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics section, and also Directeur de Recherche at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) at Sorbonne University in the "Laboratoire de Physique Théorique et Hautes Énergies" (LPTHE).
