Abhishek Manu Singhvi (born 24 February 1959) is an Indian senior advocate and politician. As politician,he is a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) and a member of the Parliament of India representing Telangana in the Rajya Sabha,the Upper House of the Indian Parliament,since August 2024. [1] He is also a spokesperson for the INC. [2] He is one of the senior advocates of the Supreme Court of India. [3]
Singhvi was born in a Marwari family. [4] His father Laxmi Mall Singhvi was a scholar in Jain history and culture. [5] He was a renowned lawyer and India's former High Commissioner to the UK. He was elected to Rajya Sabha (1998–2004). His mother's name is Kamla Singhvi.
Singhvi did his schooling at St. Columba's School,Delhi. [6] He obtained B.A.(Hons.),M.A.,PhD,PIL educated at St. Stephen's College,Trinity College,Cambridge and Harvard University. Singhvi completed his PhD under constitutional lawyer Sir William Wade of Cambridge University. The topic of his doctoral dissertation at Cambridge University was on Emergency Powers. [7] [8]
Singhvi is married to Anita Singhvi,an Indian classical singer and an exponent of Sufi music. They have two sons. [9] In 2014,he was fined ₹ 57 crore by the Income Tax Settlement Commission for failing to furnish documents supporting his claims of expenditure for running his office. [10]
Singhvi,at 37,became the youngest Additional Solicitor General of India,in 1997. [11] He held the position for a year,until 1998.

Rajya Sabha elections were held in 2018 to elect the 65 retiring members of the Rajya Sabha,Indian Parliament's upper chamber. There were,as routine,three such elections held among relevant State and Union Territory legislators by single transferable vote (STV) and Open Ballot:on 16 January to elect 3 members from Delhi and 1 member from Sikkim;on 23 March to elect 58 members from 16 States;and lastly on 21 June to elect 3 members from Kerala. Being even-numbered,2018 was a year in which about 30% of the State Legislature-elected 233-seat component of the body is elected. The other 12 seats of the body are appointed by the President.
