Access Industries, Inc. is a British-American privately held multinational industrial group. [1] It was founded in 1986 by businessman Leonard "Len" Blavatnik, who is also its chairman. Access Industries' focus is in four areas: natural resources and chemicals, media and telecommunications, [1] venture capital [2] and real estate. [1] The group invests in the United States, Europe, [3] Israel, [4] and Latin America. [3] It is headquartered in New York and London with additional offices in Moscow. [1]
Len Blavatnik founded Access Industries in 1986 as an investment company. [5] He attended Harvard Business School while running the company on the side, [3] graduating with an MBA in 1989. Among its early investments, Access Industries helped form the large aluminum producer SUAL in 1996, which later became part of UC RUSAL. In 1997, Access acquired a 40% stake in the Russian oil company TNK. [6] Half of TNK was sold to British Petroleum (BP) to form TNK-BP in 2003, [3] in what was the largest-ever foreign investment in a Russian company. [7] In 2013, Rosneft acquired TNK-BP for $55 billion, [8] with Access Industries selling its stake and Blavatnik collecting US$7 billion for his share of the oil venture. [6]
Access purchased a large stake in the fashion label Tory Burch in 2004. [9] In 2006, Access Industries took an estimated 70% stake in Top Up TV, a pay TV service in the United Kingdom [10] which sold its subscriber business to Sky in 2013. [11] In 2007, Access Industries purchased a majority stake in the sports media company Perform Group. [10] Also that year, Access became an owner in Acision, a software company focused on messaging systems. [12] Acision was acquired by Comverse, Inc. in 2015. [13] As of 2010, Access retained ownership in companies such as Icon Film Distribution UK, [10] Perform Group, Top Up TV, Amedia, RGE Group, and Warner Music Group (WMG). [14] On July 20, 2011, [15] Access acquired Warner Music Group [9] for US$3.3 billion. [16]
Access Industries has made a variety of contributions to political candidates in local, state and national elections in the United States. [17] [18] In May 2015, Access Industries launched Access Entertainment, a division headed up by former BBC Television boss Danny Cohen which specialises in investing in the entertainment media sector. [19] After investing in Facebook before its IPO, Access exited its Facebook holdings in late 2015. [2]
As of 2016, [update] Access Industries continued to have stakes in companies such as UC Rusal, LyondellBasell, Rocket Internet, Warner Music Group, and Zalando. [6] In April 2017, Access Entertainment purchased a stake in RatPac Entertainment. [20]
Among Access Industries' current holdings are businesses [1] in oil, [21] petrochemicals, [22] power generation, [23] aluminum [6] and biotechnology. [24] Access helped form the large aluminum producer SUAL 1996 with a combination of mergers and acquisitions. [6] In 2007, SUAL merged with RUSAL and the alumina business of Glencore International AG [25] to form UC RUSAL. [6] RUSAL raised $2.24 billion in a 2010 IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, [26] and as of 2017, it was the world's largest aluminum producer. [6]
In 2005 Access acquired Basell Polyolefins, a Dutch company [22] specializing in polyolefins. [8] On December 20, 2007, Basell acquired the commodity chemicals company Lyondell [22] for approximately $20 billion. [8] [22] The resulting company, LyondellBasell Industries, [8] was impacted by the 2008 financial crisis, [8] [27] and in 2009, the US operations of LyondellBasell Industries filed for bankruptcy. [27] With financing in part from Access Industries, [6] [28] in 2010, [28] LyondellBasell emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a significantly improved financial position. With a value of $15 billion, [8] it was subsequently ranked as the world's third-largest chemical company based on net sales. [8] [27] Access Industries repurchased a large stake in the company in 2013. [8] As of 2017, Access owned approximately 18% of LyondellBasell. [29]
Since 2013, Access Industries has owned Clal Industries Ltd. (CII), an Israeli industrial investment group. [4] [24] Among CII's main investments are Nesher Israel Cement Enterprises, Hadera Paper, Golf & Co., Clal Biotechnology, [24] and the logistics group Taavura. [30] Also since 2013, Access has owned a significant interest in EP Energy, a North American oil and natural gas producer with a portfolio of fields in the United States and Brazil. [21] On August 18, 2017, Access Industries and a consortium of investors agreed to acquire the energy company Calpine Corporation for $5.6 billion. [23]
Access Industries has a number of portfolio companies in the media and telecommunications industries. [1] Ice, [31] an internet and telecommunications company in Scandinavia, [32] is primarily owned by Access Industries. [33] In Israel, Access owns a third of RGE Group Ltd., a privately held media group [34] with assets including Channel 10, [4] Noga Communications and the Sports Channel. [34] Access Industries also owns a majority [35] stake in Amedia, a large Russian film and TV studio [36] known for shows such as Poor Nastya . Amedia earned exclusive rights to premiere HBO content in Russia in July 2017. [37]
Access invested in Warner Music Group (WMG) in 2004 with various co-investors. [38] After a partial sale of WMG was completed through an IPO on the NYSE in May 2005, Access continued as a significant shareholder [39] with a 2 percent stake prior to 2011. [40] Access acquired WMG [9] for US$3.3 billion, [16] including $320 million in cash and the assumption of $2 billion of WMG debt. [40]
Access Industries owns AI Film [9] [14] in London, a film finance and executive production company established in 2013. [41] Since November 2014, Access Industries has owned a majority stake in DAZN Group Limited, a sports media company [42] which Access formed in 2007 [43] by merging Inform and Premium TV. [44] Perform Group owns the sports website Sporting News [45] and launched the sports streaming video service DAZN in 2016. [46] As of 2019, Access held over 85% of the group. [45]
In May 2015, Access Entertainment was established with the hiring of its president, Danny Cohen, BBC's former director of television. [19] They took a 25% stake in Bad Wolf international TV firm, and have a financing venture for drama programming with BBC Worldwide/Lookout Point and a development slate deal with House Productions. [47] In April 2017, Access Entertainment purchased James Packer's ownership share of RatPac Entertainment, which includes the joint venture, RatPac-Dune Entertainment. [48]
In 2018, Pearlfisher has created the new identity for Access Entertainment. [49] In December 2021, Access Entertainment sold their stake in Bad Wolf to Sony Pictures Television. [50]
In 2015, Access Industries launched Access Technology Ventures, a venture and growth technology investment arm focused on pre-IPO "unicorns". [2] As of 2017, it had investments in companies including Snapchat, Square, Yelp, Alibaba, Rocket Internet, [2] Deezer, [51] Gett, [52] Spotify, [2] [46] Zalando, and DigitalOcean. In August 2017, Access Technology Ventures lead a $300 million round of funding for the smartphone maker Essential Products, investing $100 million in the company. [53] Access Industries formed First Access Entertainment in October 2015, which focuses on talent development and representation in music, entertainment, and fashion. SoftBank Group Corp. is a Japanese multinational investment holding company headquartered in Minato, Tokyo which focuses on investment management. The group primarily invests in companies operating in technology that offer goods and services to customers in a multitude of markets and industries ranging from the internet to automation. With over $100 billion in capital at its onset, SoftBank's Vision Fund is the world's largest technology-focused venture capital fund. Fund investors included sovereign wealth funds from countries in the Middle East.
Warner Music Group Corp. is an American multinational entertainment and record label conglomerate headquartered in New York City. It is one of the "big three" recording companies and the third-largest in the global music industry, after Universal Music Group (UMG) and Sony Music Entertainment (SME). Formerly part of Time Warner, WMG was publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange from 2005 until 2011, when it announced its privatization and sale to Access Industries. It later had its second IPO on Nasdaq in 2020, once again becoming a public company. With a multibillion-dollar annual turnover, WMG employs more than 3,500 people and has operations in more than 50 countries throughout the world.
Edgar Miles Bronfman Jr. is an American businessman, filmmaker, theater producer, and media executive who is a managing partner at Accretive LLC, a private equity firm focused on creating and investing in technology companies. He previously was CEO of Warner Music Group from 2004 to 2011 and as Chairman of Warner Music Group from 2011 to 2012. In May 2011, the sale of WMG was announced; Bronfman would continue as CEO in the transaction. In August 2011, he became Chairman of the company as Stephen Cooper became CEO. Bronfman previously was CEO of Seagram and vice-chairman of Vivendi Universal. Bronfman Jr. expanded and later divested ownership of the Seagram Company, and also worked as a Broadway and film producer, and songwriter under the pseudonyms Junior Miles and Sam Roman. German Borisovich Khan is a Ukrainian-Russian oligarch, billionaire, and businessman. After graduating from university in 1988 he worked in a wholesale business selling consumer items, before setting up his own cooperative. He was then appointed the head of the wholesale trade business Alfa Eco as part of the Alfa Group Consortium, by his college friend Mikhail Fridman. Alfa Group, which he also shares with another fellow billionaire and college peer, Alexei Kuzmichev, is the biggest financial and industrial investment group in Russia. He became president of Alfa Eco in 1996 and was instrumental in directing the company to focus on export and the oil trade. When Alfa bought Tyumen Oil (TNK) in 1997, he joined the board of directors. He was deputy chairman of TNK Oil Company from 1997 until 2003. In 2003, Khan worked with the other TNK owners to form a 50–50 joint venture with British Petroleum (BP), in what was the largest foreign investment in Russia to date, at US$8 billion.
LyondellBasell Industries N.V. is an American multinational chemical company incorporated in the Netherlands with U.S. operations headquartered in Houston, Texas, and offices in London, UK. The company is the largest licensor of polyethylene and polypropylene technologies. It also produces ethylene, propylene, polyolefins, and oxyfuels.
Shanda Group is a privately-owned multinational investment firm. With offices in Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, New York and Redwood City, the firm invests in public markets, real estate and venture capital, focusing on companies in the fields of healthcare, financial services, media, and technology. The company was established in December 1999 as Shanda Interactive Entertainment Limited, an online gaming company known for publishing and operating games such as The World of Legend and Magical Land. By 2004 Shanda was the largest online game company in China, and its listing on the NASDAQ that year under ticker SNDA was the largest IPO for a Chinese internet company in the United States. Shanda Interactive later diversified and its gaming unit spun off in 2009, raising $1.04 billion in an IPO (GAME). Shanda Group was taken private in 2012 by its founders, and by 2017 it had $8 billion in net assets under management.
TNK-BP was a major vertically integrated Russian oil company headquartered in Moscow. It was Russia's third-largest oil producer and among the ten largest private oil companies in the world. In 2013 it was acquired by Russian oil company Rosneft.
Legendary Entertainment is an American mass media and film production company based in Burbank, California, founded by Thomas Tull along with Jon Jashni, Larry Clark, William Fay and Scott Mednick. The company has often collaborated with the major studios, including Warner Bros. Pictures, Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures and Paramount Pictures, as well as streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. Since 2016, Legendary has been a subsidiary of the Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group and American equity firm Apollo.

Operating as Houston Refining, LP, LyondellBasell's Houston refinery is a 268,000-barrel-per-day (42,600 m3/d) refinery located on the Texas Gulf Coast in Houston that occupies 700 acres (2.8 km2) along the Houston Ship Channel. This refinery has been in operation since 1918, and it currently produces gasoline, lubricant base stock, propylene, and other associated materials. LyondellBasell has announced its intention to close this refinery by 2023, to help it reach its climate-change goals.
MGM Holdings, Inc. was an American holding company incorporated in Delaware and headquartered in Beverly Hills, California that launched on February 11, 2005 by a creditor-oriented consortium and the former parent company of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Technology company Amazon acquired the company on March 17, 2022 and later merged it with its Amazon Studios subsidiary on October 3, 2023, forming Amazon MGM Studios.
Basell Polyolefins was a joint venture between BASF and Royal Dutch Shell. Leonard Blavatnik's Access Industries acquired it from the venturers for $5.7 billion in August 2005. In 2007, Basell merged with the privately owned US company Lyondell Chemical Company to form LyondellBasell, which went bankrupt in the US in January 2009, and emerged from bankruptcy in April 2010.
