Aden Durde (born July 10, 1979) is a British American football coach and former linebacker who is the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as the defensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys from 2021 to 2023.

Durde played as linebacker for the Carolina Panthers and Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL) and the Scottish Claymores and Hamburg Sea Devils of NFL Europe. Durde is also known for being an integral part of the International Player Pathway program. [1]

Playing career

Born in Middlesex, England, Durde began his football career in the United Kingdom with the London Olympians, a British American Football League team.

Scottish Claymores

Durde played for the Scottish Claymores from 2003 until 2004 when team operations were permanently suspended by NFL Europe due to low attendance numbers and an increased league focus on the German market. [2]

Hamburg Sea Devils (first stint)

In 2005 Durde joined the Hamburg Sea Devils of NFL Europe, for their inaugural season, playing as a middle linebacker.

Carolina Panthers

Following the conclusion of the NFL Europe season Durde was allocated to the Carolina Panthers on June 15, 2005, as part of the NFL International Development Practice Squad program. [3]

On October 19, 2005, Durde was released from the Panthers practice squad after testing positive for nandrolone on August 1 during a routine preseason drug test. [4]

Hamburg Sea Devils (second stint)

After his departure from the Carolina Panthers, he returned to the Sea Devils for the 2006 NFL Europe season.

He was a member of Hamburg's 2007 NFL Europa World Bowl XV championship winning team. [5] 2007 would be his last season with the Sea Devils due to the league ceasing operations following the conclusion of the season. [6] [7]

Kansas City Chiefs

In 2008 he was on the practice squad of the Kansas City Chiefs, for each of their pre-season games. [8] [9]

Coaching career

London Warriors

From 2011 to 2016, Durde served as the defensive coordinator for the London Warriors. [10]

Dallas Cowboys (first stint)

From 2014 to 2015, Durde served as a coaching intern with the Dallas Cowboys through the NFL fellowship program. [5]

NFLUK

Durde served as the head of football development at NFLUK from 2015 to 2018.

Concerned about the lack of a defined route into the league for players who did not go to high school or college in the United States, Durde worked alongside another British ex-NFL player - Osi Umenyiora - to create a training program and set-up meetings and try-outs with NFL teams. The initial iteration of this training camp in 2016, featured a small number of specifically selected football players who were currently playing amateur football in Europe. The training program came with the support of the NFL and was the subject of a 12-episode documentary series produced by NFL Films titled "NFL Undiscovered". [11] Following the success of the program the NFL created the International Player Pathway Program in 2017. [12] [13]

Atlanta Falcons

In 2016, Durde joined the Atlanta Falcons under the Bill Walsh NFL diversity coaching fellowship. [14]

On April 11, 2018, Durde was hired by the Atlanta Falcons as their new defensive quality control coach under head coach Dan Quinn. [15] This hiring made him the first ever British full-time coach in NFL history and the first full time coach from outside the United States. [1] [10]

In 2020, he was promoted to outside linebackers coach. [16]

Dallas Cowboys (second stint)

On January 20, 2021, Durde was hired by the Dallas Cowboys as their defensive line coach, reuniting him with then Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. [17]

Seattle Seahawks

On February 13, 2024, Durde was hired by the Seattle Seahawks as their defensive coordinator under head coach Mike Macdonald. [18] Durde again made league history with this hiring, becoming the first British-born defensive coordinator in league history. [1]

Personal life

Durde and his wife, Kate, have two sons. [5]

He won three Super Bowls during his playing career with the Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers before becoming a coach in 2004. Norton has served as an NFL defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks. He is the son of former world champion heavyweight boxer Ken Norton.

The 2008 Miami Dolphins season was the franchise's 39th season in the National Football League (NFL), the 43rd overall and the first under new head coach Tony Sparano. During the regular season the Dolphins completed the greatest single-season turnaround in NFL history, going from a 1–15 regular season record in 2007 to an 11–5 record in 2008. The previous record for most improved team one year after a 1–15 season belonged to the 1997 New York Jets, who went 9–7. The 1999 Indianapolis Colts were the only other team to accomplish a 10-game turnaround, winning 13 games after winning 3 in 1998, which was also the first year of the Peyton Manning era. Additionally, Miami won the AFC East, becoming the first team in NFL history to win their division after only having one win the previous season. The division title also snapped the Patriots' 5-year streak of winning the AFC East. Their season would come to an end in the Wild Card round when they were defeated by the Baltimore Ravens, which coincidentally, was also the only team they beat last season in overtime to save the Dolphins from suffering a winless season. With their 11–5 record and division title, the Dolphins had hopes of achieving their first playoff victory since 2000, or to possibly become the first team ever to make the Super Bowl after winning only one game the previous season, similar to how the Carolina Panthers went 1–15 in 2001 and made Super Bowl XXXVIII just two seasons later.

Quinn later coached defensive lines in college prior to joining the NFL in 2001. He was the defensive coordinator of the Legion of Boom-era Seattle Seahawks that appeared in two consecutive Super Bowls and won XLVIII.
