Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad. With the exception of 1904 and the canceled 1916 Summer Olympics, sailing has always been included on the Olympic schedule. The Sailing program of 1980 consisted of a total of six sailing classes (disciplines). For each class seven races were scheduled from 19 to 29 July 1980 of the coast of Tallinn, in that time an illegally annexed part of the USSR at the Baltic Sea. The sailing was done on the triangular type Olympic courses.

Nicolas Hénard is a French sailor. He is a double Olympic gold medal winner. First in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, winning the Tornado class with Jean-Yves Le Déroff. Second in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, winning the Tornado class with Yves Loday.
Marcelo Bastos Ferreria is a Brazilian sailor and Olympic champion. He received a gold medal in the Star Class at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta with Torben Grael. He received a bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, and won a gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
Hilary Hurlburt Smart was an American sailor and Olympic champion. He competed at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, where he received a gold medal in the star class with the boat Hilarius, together with his father, Paul Smart. He often described his Olympic victory by speaking about "the unbelievable feeling of watching the torch come in at the Olympic Stadium. It made me feel proud and responsible to think that my dad and I were the only Americans in our specialty since each country was allowed just a single two-man boat."
Magnus Liljedahl is an American sailor and Olympic champion. He competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where he received a gold medal in the star class, together with Mark Reynolds.
Jennifer Margaret Armstrong is an Olympic sailor from New Zealand. After competing for her native country at the 1992 Olympics, she moved to Australia in 1996 and won a historic sailing gold for her adopted country at the 2000 Olympics.

He competed in the Soling class together with Jochen Schümann and Thomas Flach at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, where they won the gold medal. Robert Bentley Haines, Jr. is an American sailor and Olympic champion. Born in San Diego, California, he has won seven world championships in 4 different class of boats. He was associate producer and sailing team manager for the Walt Disney film "Morning Light". He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for being a member of the 1980 US Olympic Sailing Team, which did not compete in the Soviet Union (Estonia) due to the boycott of the Olympic Games that year by President Jimmy Carter.

Sailing at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London was held 29 July – 11 August 2012 at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in Weymouth. The 2012 sailing program consisted of a total of ten events. Eleven fleet races were scheduled off the coast at Weymouth Bay for each event, except for the 49er and the Elliott 6m classes. For the 49er class, a total of 16 races were scheduled. Of the 11 (16) races, 10 (15) were scheduled as opening races and the last one as medal race. For the Elliott 6m a series of match races was scheduled. The sailing was done on different types of courses.
Joanna Ayela Aleh is a New Zealand sailor. She is a national champion, a former world champion, and an Olympic gold medallist.
Olivia Elizabeth "Polly" Powrie is a New Zealand sailor. She has won Olympic and world championship titles in the 470 class, and is also a former 420 world champion.
Peter Lang is a German Olympic sailor in the Flying Dutchman class. He crewed for Albert Batzill and finished eight in the 1988 Summer Olympics and fifth in the 1992 edition.
