Roman Paul Alois Koch (born 4 February 1958) is a German sailor. As helmsman, he became twice World Champion in the Soling together with his teammates Maxl Koch and Gregor Bornemann.
Koch switched, with his brother Maxl Koch, after a good run in the Flying Dutchman in 1977 to the Soling. Koch as helmsmen won his first Soling World Championship 20–27 May 2005 of the Tyrrhenian Sea in front of Castiglione della Pescaia, Italy with Maxl Koch and Gregor Bornemann. [22] [1] [2] The second time took place five years later 5–13 February on the Guaiba river off the coast of Porto Alegre, Brazil. [22] [3] [4] After the Championship in Castellione the Koch team earned the nickname "The Maremma boys". In 2009 the Koch team took the silver at the Soling Worlds in Etobicoke, Canada. Furthermore, Koch won two gold and five silver medals at Soling European Championships between 2003 and 2013 all as helmsman and with the same team members. Koch holds many national Championships in several countries.
Koch lives in Munich and works in the marine industry as sailmaking consultant, sailing coach and consultant for tracking and trace.
Castiglione della Pescaia, regionally simply abbreviated as Castiglione, is an ancient seaside town in the province of Grosseto, in Tuscany, central Italy. The modern city grew around a medieval 12th century fortress and a large fishery, from which it acquired its designation. Since then over 50 Soling North American Championship were held. The popularity grew during the Olympic period of the Soling. After that era the event continued and is still reasonable successful. The Soling North American Championship is an "Open" event. This means that competitors from all over the world are eligible to enter. Charles "Charlie" Q. Kamps is an American sailor and lawyer. As sailor he competed in many Soling World, European and North American Championships since the creation of the Soling class (1969).
Theodorus "Theo" Adrianus de Lange is a sailor from the Netherlands, who represented his country at the 2018 Vintage Yachting Games in Hellerup Denmark. De Lange as middleman together with helmsman Rudy den Outer and Gabor Helmhout on the foredeck took the Gold medal in the Soling. During the 2019 North American Championship in Kingston, Ontario, De Lange again as middleman in the Dutch Soling Sophie’s Choice together with helmsman Rudy den Outer but now with Thies Bosch on the foredeck took first place. This was the first time European sailors won this championship in the over fifty years history of the North American Soling Championship!
Peter Hall is a sailor from Canada, who represented his country at the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis, United States with team members Scott Morgan and Alain Boucher where they took the Silver medal in the Soling. Also at the 2018 Vintage Yachting Games in Hellerup Denmark, Hall as helmsman together with his fellow crew members Gord de Vries and Johan Offermans took the silver medal in the Soling. Hall is representing Group P in the council of World Sailing. Peter won so far four World Championships. Furthermore, he was president of the International Soling Association from 2015 - 2016.
