Alco is a ghost town in Angelina County, in the U.S. state of Texas. [1] It is located within the Lufkin, Texas micropolitan area.
Alco started as a flag station around 1911 after the Angelina and Neches River Railroad built through the community. There was a sawmill and a few houses in the 1930s. The sawmill closed during World War II and Alco became a ghost town. Only a few scattered, abandoned houses remained in the 1990s. [2]
Alco was located on the Angelina and Neches River Railroad, 10 mi (16 km) northeast of Lufkin in northeastern Angelina County. [2]
Alco had its school in the 1930s. [2] Today, the ghost town is located within the Huntington Independent School District.
The Neches River begins in Van Zandt County west of Rhine Lake and flows for 416 miles (669 km) through the piney woods of east Texas, defining the boundaries of 14 counties on its way to its mouth on Sabine Lake near the Rainbow Bridge. Two major reservoirs, Lake Palestine and B. A. Steinhagen Reservoir are located on the Neches. The Angelina River is a major tributary with its confluence at the north of Lake B. A. Steinhagen. Tributaries to the south include Village Creek and Pine Island Bayou, draining much of the Big Thicket region, both joining the Neches a few miles north of Beaumont. Towns and cities located along the river including Tyler, Lufkin, and Silsbee, although significant portions of the Neches River are undeveloped and flow through protected natural lands. In contrast, the lower 40 miles of the river are a major shipping channel, highly industrialized, with a number of cities and towns concentrated in the area including Beaumont, Vidor, Port Neches, Nederland, Groves, and Port Arthur.
Angelina County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 86,395. Its county seat is Lufkin. It was formed in 1846 from Nacogdoches County. It is named for a Hasinai Native American woman who assisted early Spanish missionaries and was named Angelina by them. It is a wet county as of November 2006, after a wet/dry election. In November 2007 the small community of Burke was the only city in it to return to dry status.
Lufkin is the largest city in Angelina County, Texas and the county seat. The city is situated in Deep East Texas and is 115 mi (185 km) northeast of Houston. Its estimated population is 35,021 as of July 1, 2019.
