Alien on Stage is a 2020 British documentary film directed by Lucy Harvey and Danielle Kummer. The film premiered at the London FrightFest Film Festival in October 2020, [2] and it also showed at SXSW Online and Imagine Film Festival in April 2021. [3]

Plot

British bus drivers from Dorset are spending a year to create a serious stage adaptation of Ridley Scott's 1979 classical sci-fi horror film Alien , which they anticipate will be premiered on Broadway, despite wobbly sets, unreal acting and ho-hum special effects.

Reception

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 94% based on 35 critics, with an average rating of 7.7/10. The site's critics consensus reads "A delight for fans of Ridley Scott's 1979 classic, Alien on Stage celebrates the power that art possesses to bring people together to honor their dreams." [4] On Metacritic, Alien on Stage holds 71 out of a 100 based on 5 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [5]

Peter Debruge of Variety wrote "While I'm glad Kummer's camera was there to capture it, the movie doesn't reveal enough about the performers' backgrounds or personalities". [6]

Marc Savlov of The Austin Chronicle called the documentary "Inspiring and uplifting". [7]

According to Abby Olcese of RogerEbert.com , "Alien on Stage is made by people who are deeply familiar with the production and the people behind it, and the film lacks some context that might help larger audiences forge a stronger connection". [8]

Jude Dry of indieWire said "By the triumphant curtain call, as young Scott trots onstage for a very professional bow in full Xenomorph garb, it's clear "Alien on Stage" has completely captured the hearts of the audience - film, theater, and Christopher Guest lovers alike". [9]

Corporal Dwayne Hicks is a fictional character in the Alien franchise. First appearing in the film Aliens, who was portrayed by actor Michael Biehn. The character is a Senior Corporal of the United States Colonial Marine Corps aboard the USS Sulaco and is one of the only 4 survivors of the Sulaco crew's expedition to LV-426, along with Ellen Ripley, Rebecca "Newt" Jorden and the android Bishop. Hicks is killed during the introduction of the film's sequel Alien 3, a decision that garnered negative backlash from fans of the franchise. Hicks later returns as the main protagonist of the "Stasis Interrupted" DLC in the videogame Aliens: Colonial Marines., and as a side character in the game's main story.
