The Universiade is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a combination of the words "University" and "olympiad". The Universiade is often referred to in English as the World University Games or World Student Games; however, this latter term can also refer to competitions for sub-University grades students The Universiade is the largest multi-sport event in the world apart from the Olympic Games.. The most recent games were in 2017: the Winter Universiade was in Almaty, Kazakhstan, while the Summer Universiade was held in Taipei, Taiwan.The 2019 Winter Universiade in running at city of Krasnoyarsk, Russian Federation, between 2 and 12 March 2019 and the 2019 Summer Universiade in Naples, Italy between 3 and 14 July.
The Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire is responsible for the organisation and governance of worldwide sports competitions for student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 28. It was founded in 1949 as the world governing body of national university sports organisations and currently has 174 member associations from five continents. Between 1949 and 2011, it was based in Brussels (Belgium); since 2011, it is based in Lausanne (Switzerland).
Figure skating is a part of the Winter Universiade. It was first held as part of the Universiade in 1960. Medals may be awarded in men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, ice dancing, and synchronized skating.
Baseball is not a mandatory sport in the Summer Universiade. In 1993, the sport was held at the XVII Summer Universiade in Buffalo, USA, and it was staged two years after at the XVIII Summer Universiade in Fukuoka, Japan. Twenty years later, the sport made a comeback at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea and will played again at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei, Taiwan.
The 2013 Summer Universiade, officially known as the XXVII Summer Universiade, was held in the city of Kazan (Russia), the most northerly city ever to host a Summer Universiade. Over 10,400 university athletes from 162 countries participated in 13 mandatory and 14 optional sports, making the 2013 Universiade the biggest ever in the history of the event. For the first time in history a Cultural Universiade was also included, with many festivals and shows held simultaneously with the sporting events. The Universiade was organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and by the authorities of the Republic of Tatarstan.
The 2015 Summer Universiade, officially known as the XXVIII Summer Universiade, was held in the city of Gwangju, South Korea. It took place from July 3 to July 14, 2015.
The 2017 Summer Universiade, the XXIX Summer Universiade, commonly known as the Taipei 2017 Universiade, took place in Taipei, Chinese Taipei from 19 August to 30 August 2017.
At the 1993 Summer Universiade, the athletics events were held at the University at Buffalo Stadium in Amherst, New York in the United States from July 14 to 18. A total of 43 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 20 by female athletes.

The Philippines has participated at the Universiade debuting at the 1965 Summer Universiade. From 1967 until 2007, athletes representing the country were sent by the University Athletic Association of the Philippines with sanction from Philippine Olympic Committee. Since 2011 it is the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP), a member of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), that has been sending competitors representing the country at the Universiade.

Tennis was contested at the 2015 Summer Universiade from July 4 to 12 at the Tennis Academy in Gwangju, South Korea. Men's and women's singles, men's and women's team, and men's, women's, and mixed doubles events was contested.
Russia participated in 12 editions of the Universiade, debuting at the 1993 Summer Universiade. Since then, Russia has been at the top positions in the medal count, only three times being under the top three. The 2013 Summer Universiade was the best for Russia, beating the previous total medal and gold record of the 1973 Summer Universiade, of the then USSR. Furthermore, Russia produced a number of Universiade records, including the total medals won.
Gymnastics is a sport at the Universiade that was first contested in 1961. Currently, two disciplines are competed: artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics. At the 2011 edition, aerobic gymnastics was also part of the program.
The 2021 Winter Universiade, the XXX Winter Universiade, is scheduled for 2021 in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Handball competition has been in the Universiade only at 2015 as optional sport.
The 2021 Summer Universiade, the XXXI Summer Universiade, will be organised on August 8 to August 19, 2021, in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China.
